I just purchased a H79 and was wondering what you guys use for a SD-DVD player , or what ever you are using.

I would like to get an upconverting SD-DVD with DVI as I have DVI switching in my Preamp (Outlaw Audio 990).

Also I will need a HD cable box with DVI, if one exists.

The unit is a factory referb. Hope all works out well.

How do you like your PJ. The thing went for 9,000.00 two years ago and now they're 1,099.00 .

My plans are to do a 100" wide CIH setup. Any input on this PJ would help.

Welcome to the H79 club.
Bookmark this site. Provantage.com. they usually have the best price going on replacement bulbs. I'm on my third in my 28 months of ownership.

As for DVD I'm using the Oppo 971 which was a DVI output unit and had a good bang for the buck upscaling capability. That model has been discontinued in favor of the HDMI models which you should be able to use with an adapter or an adapter cable.

I have an LG Direct TV box that has DVI but at this point you should be thinking of the boxes with MPEG4 capability so that you can take advantage of this falls new channels promised by Direct.
I think they only have HDMI so again an adapter.

HD sat programing looks great on the H79. You are going to want to get as many channels as possible, and don't overlook OTA HD channels.

Bumping up for another H79 owner to chime in on your set up.

I previously owned an H79 in a CIH setup and it was a phenomenal projector. The optics are top notch so it worked very well with my UH380, and of course with the motorized focus you can get right up to the screen and get the image razor sharp. I used an Oppo 971 for my DVD player which worked very well, and later on I used an HD-A2 outputting 480i to a VP50 - the 971 performed very closely to the A2/VP50.

My 2.35:1 screen (1.3 gain) is 133" wide and I thought the H79 was capable of lighting up the whole thing nicely - people will offer differing opinions on this but that was my personal preference. You will definitely be very happy with this projector!

Would i be correct that you used the DVI for the 971 ?

I very glad to hear you had good results.

That is correct. Once I purchased the VP50 I used a DVI -> HDMI adapter, and ran HDMI from the VP50 and used a HDMI -> DVI adapter at the H79. Both the straight DVI cable and the HDMI cables with adapters worked very well for me.

Did you send the 720p signal or the 1080i ?

Send 720P to the projector and keep it on NATIVE. SJ

What's your throw distance?

What SJHT said - I always sent native 720p to the H79. I seem to remember the on-board processing for the H79 was pretty good, so if you want to send 480i or 1080i source (i.e. DVD or HDTV) directly to the H79, it was by no means a slouch when doing de-interlacing and scaling.

What's your throw distance?

I think TR was around 2.0, but that was in March so it's been a while - it would have equated to a 200" (17.5') TD.
