High-definition video viewing is developing slower than the industry had expected.
The chief executive of the largest European consumer electronics company said Wednesday.
umm what exactly did they expect?
That a higher "bit rate or storage" or better picture was going to attract everyone in droves???
This should probably be in the Blu-Ray forum, as Philips is one of the core BD companies.
Yet refreshing to hear honest comments from them:
We are seeing signs of momentum. But this emerging market is still going in many directions at the same time and the jury is still out.
metalsaber 08-29-07, 04:05 PM You mean the super high prices aren't making consumers buy it?
The Doctor 08-29-07, 04:08 PM what did they expect +1
HDTV have to become main stream before the new formats have chance of catching on.
From a recent article I read, Blu's strategy is to defeat HD. HD is to compete with DVD.
HD DVD understands the HDTV's becoming mainstream is essential to their plan, where Blu buffaloed the studios and piggybacked a Blu player into the PS3, for instant victory right? Didn't work out that way and studios are now wondering why the public is reluctant. DVD is the big dog and with upconverting players too many don't care to spend the extra cash on the new equipment.
DVD had huge advantages
1) better than 90% of the TVs at time of its debut were capable pf demonstrating DVD's picture advantage. No new Television purchase was needed.
2.) there were no upconverting VCRs with near DVD quality
Even with those advantage DVD was slow to catch on, certain studios and directors we are talking about today were slow embrace it.
Robert Spalding 08-29-07, 04:10 PM I think the Phillips chief is basically saying that if you take out the PS3 from the sales numbers....the Phillips boxes don't sell.
what did they expect +1
"Duh... let's split from the DVD consortium and launch our own format... we'll have people knocking down our doors to buy it!"
Everdog 08-29-07, 04:21 PM Didn't Philips sell 3 BR players? Not models, I mean total. I know Panasonic is up to 12.

Robert Spalding 08-29-07, 04:47 PM wow, you guys are brutal!
;-)
B-Diddy 08-29-07, 04:49 PM when you base your player off the worst & first BD player (BD-p100) and sell it for like $800, what do you expect? Try $299 philips, thats about where fans of your products start raising an eyebrow. Philips had no business being out there in the 1st gen arena...just like RCA had no business having a 1st gen HDDVD player.

Hey, B-Diddy, my RCA HD DVD player works just fine, thank you... :D

im sure it does, just saying (as RCA found out for themselves) that they "RCA & Philips" aren't the type or brands that have a following for premeiring a new format.

This is just as apropos for HDDVD as it is for BD.

Like I said above...he's only counting Non-PS3 Blu-Ray players.
mrkrispy 08-30-07, 03:34 AM $30 discs, 2 formats, buggy/incomplete players, inconsistent disc mastering....hmmm why isn't it selling???

OMG - you took the words right out of my mouth.
I would also add incompetent sales reps at major retail outlets and lack of content on any one format!

I bought one of those 3 :)

Only 6 million are in use ;-)
And only 500,000 of those play Blu-ray Discs often.
angrypolarbear 08-30-07, 08:48 AM It's only worth buying HD if you have a HDTV. It's really only worth going neutral if you are going to get into HDM, otherwise you are always looking at the other side and wishing your side had this or that movie. That's daunting for the average consumer. It's either spend double to get what you want in HD movies, or pick a side and be bitter hoping that one side dies next week.
