I don't care about what is going to be released in France or the UK, just want to know if it will be released on HD DVD here sometime soon?

I think it's being released in the UK and France right now because it CAN'T be released here in the US do to the distributor.

Nope. Import for the win.

Might as well import this one since its not even in English anyway.

I agree. One of the things I like about HD DVD is that a person will be able to import foreign films that might never be released in the US--or at least be years away. Neither Blu-ray nor HD DVD seem ready to release many foreign films within the US.

I believe this title was distributed domestically by New Line Cinema on DVD. I don't think you will see it released domestically anytime soon.

According to the New Line home video rep I talked to at the Comic-Con, they plan on a domestic release sometime next year on both formats.

Not that surprising since they won't release their first title until the end of this year.

Got sick of waiting for an HD version so I rented the DVD this weekend. I loved the film but hated the image quality of the DVD release. I NEED this film in HD now! I guess I will have shell out for the import like others have.

SonyAteMyBaby,

I know just how you feel.

If you were lucky enough to catch it in its very brief theatrical run, you know it has to be seen in HD.:)

the french version looks INCREDIBLE, it has THX certification. But has forced fench subs if you watch in on spanish.

The UK version will have english subs, but I really don't knwo if it will include all the extras from the french version, wich are awesome!

!
Isn't that the one that comes with a bunch of French (R2) DVDs and costs about a Gajillion dollars?

I watched this on standard dvd and the image quality was very good. In fact so good that it made me think that the HD version would be a knock out.

Agreed, as good an SD picture as I've seen on my system.

New Line will distribute on both Blu-ray and HD DVD. The first title will be "Hairspray," but other titles will follow soon. Hang on... (Waiting for LOTR)

no doubt. it's not that the violence is excessive, you just aren't expecting it.

They showed it on Cinemax. If you have a DVR or a D-VCR, you can grab it there. It's 1.85, so the AR isn't even butchered for once.

(Yes, I know HD-lite or even full 1080i doesn't compare to the HDM disc.)

They are very fast. Highly recommended

The Cinemax showing was very good. There was some macroblocking in a few forest scenes from fast motion but overall the picture was excellent. Fortunately we get it over cable and don't suffer from HD-lite.

Like you said, an HDM disc will be much better, but the Cinemax version will hold me over until the disc is available.

what's the best import of this film?

Also, how are the HD DVDs that are available overseas made? Are they produced by the film studios and just released outside of the US?

I caved and ordered it yesterday at Amazon.UK and I will be getting it shipped for about $38, which is about what it would cost for a $35 combo disc plus tax at Target or Best Buy.

If you're interested:

EDIT: It looks like the price has already gone up since yesterday, from £15.95 to £18.74. I think that's a difference of about $5.50 or so.

I went to a theater with an old gf and there really much to see, the one movie I wanted to see at the time that I can't even remember wasn't playing for 2 more hours. So I saw Pan's Labyrinth on a whim. I thought, did I see a kid's movie? Then it got deeper and deeper, and just was amazing in every way. And I knew soon as I got an HD DVD player - this is a movie that HAD to be purchased in HD.

giantchicken,

Let us know how it looks when you get it. Looks like I will be ordering it from them as the price is pretty decent, all things considered.
