If I record a live program from the STB to the D-VHS, can the firewire from the JVC unit (HM-DH30000u) to a capture in Win XP remove the 5C flag, or am I strictly limited to watching the program on the JVC unit?

You are limited to watching 5C protected ("copy one generation") programs on the JVC unit.
