I have been in the HD DVD threads off and on, and have owned an HD-A1 before, but have no bias towards either format. I just want the movies that I want. The Best Buy guy told me that "blue is going to win". Of course I could get a combo player, but cant fork out the cash for that. BTW, can I get "Reign of Fire" on BD either as a domestic or import?...doesn't matter which. Haven't kept up with the war, but if I do go blue, I will get a PS3. ANY FLAMING IS NOT ALOWED...thanks...I just want to buy now and know that I am spending my money in the right place. THANKS IN ADVANCE,

Terry

I'm going to avoid the format war question and skip right to your Reign Of Fire question. Yes it's available in the USA on BD. There's also a Japanese HD DVD import available. I own the BD and it's a worthwhile purchase. I can highly recommend the PS3 as it's perhaps the best way to get into Blu-ray ATM.

I got a PS3 after having the first two Samsung models, and I am totally happy with it. It is clearly the best way to go Blu.

I agree. If you are on the fence about purchasing a BD player, I highly recommend a PS3. Not only does it allow you to play a large assortment of PS1, PS2 and obviously PS3 games, but it provides so many other multimedia features that makes it a great value for $499. Buy from Amazon so you can get three free movies in addition to the 5 you get from Sony.

I echo what others say about PS3.It's the most future proof since you can upgrade the firmware, and if you're into gaming it plays every home console game ever made with the word 'Playstation' on it.Also, since this war is so uncertain(even though Bluray leads sales)the machine is the only bluray player with resale potential if Blu-ray lost this war(unlikely, but stranger things have happened)

If PS1/PS2 gaming is of any concern, however, definitely get the 60GB while it's still available. The 80GB model (and presumably any future shipping models) has the backward-compatibility hardware removed - instead relying upon software emulation, which only works reliably for a handful of games.

If that is of no concern, then the 80GB might be a better choice due to its potentially lower heat generation and/or power consumption, as it reportedly uses the 65nm version of the Cell processor, though I cannot confirm that the newer-production 60GB models do not.

I'd still recommend the 60GB model, as for the price of $500 you're getting a fully-functional Blu-Ray player with hardware to burn (it's got everything necessary to meet the requirements for up to Blu-Ray Profile 2.0, and then some), and a top-of-the-line game system to boot - just sorely lacking many good games at the moment, but those will come. The extra $100 for the 80GB model only gets you a free game (Motorstorm) and an extra 20GB on a hard drive which was already fully-user-upgradable; it's not worth it.

Sorry, but your "handful of titles" comment is a load of crap. If anything, it's only a handful of titles that have issues with the software emulation.

It would appear to be better than it was the last time I looked, but there are still a large number of titles with minor or noticable issues - as listed on Playstation's Europe (http://faq.eu.playstation.com/bc/bcGames.htm) site, or searchable at Playstation US (http://www.us.playstation.com/Support/CompatibleStatus) - more on the PS1 side than the PS2. I don't care much, as I never owned the PS1, and only briefly had the PS2, but a coworker of mine was quite concerned; he had literally hundreds of games - more PS1 than PS2 - many of which would not work with software emulation at the time.

Again, if that's a concern, better to stick with hardware compatibility…

Get a PS3 from sonystyle.com with their $150.00 off creditcard offer and get the hd-a2 from amazon or one of the many other places clearing them out for the coming soon a3, and for $600.00 be done wundering if that movie you want is coming to you favorite format soon or not.

Or just get the PS3 from sonystyle for $350.00, good luck
