I got my 52" XBR4 this week.
I bought The 300 and the Planet Earth 4 disc set. Blu-Ray being played on a PS3
The Planet Earth discs look phenomenal (for the most part)
However, when I play The 300 is looks as though someone is sprinkling pepper on it the whole time....terrible....anyone else have any experiences like this?

I don't have all my settings tweaked yet as I am still just getting into the set but even default settings would not look this bad...

It,s normal, the movie have 'Fake Noise and Grain' in it, to give a a style, or the 'Rought Paper' look as i call it. You should have seen it in IMAX if you think it's terrible on you're tv LOL!

300 is a Highly stylized movie, like most movie inspired by a Frank Muller Story (Sin City anyone?)

Ok, I thought maybe I had a bad disc or something.

I just dont remember it being like this when I first saw it on a SD DVD.

Thanks.

SD DVD doesn't have the resolution to truly reproduce that sort of thing, i was probably way softer and you didn't see it as much, now since 1080p is 6x more pixel, the 'Grain/Noise' is also 6x more precise..

It's just 300.

There is no the in the title.

Yeah, 300 does have a "grainy" look, and that could be what you are seeing.

I am not a big film grain person myself!

How do you like the XBR4? I was thinking of getting it. I am a HUGE pioneer fan(own the PDP-4341 and PDP-5071). The new 5081 looks amazing, but I definitely want the xbr4. Especially if they were able to get the black levels almost up to plasmas. How much did that run you also?

Sony would never be able to get their TRINITRON or WEGA blacks in their BRAVIAs.
Better stick with the 8th gen PIO and don't get hijacked by excessive BRAVIA CONTRAST and BLEEDING BACKLIGHT.

I love it. The picture is amazing. I can't compare to the plasma for you as I have always had CRT's until now but it looks freakin' sweet in my opinion...almost 3D.
The good news...for me. My buddy's mom works for Sony. So it was $3375 after tax with free delivery!!

Totally agree. Throw in the ridiculous price...

Sorry for the off topic!

300 is grainy both in the shooting and then in the digital editing. It is stylizedto reflect the appearance of the graphic novel off of which it is based.

true, although they are close with the SXRDs. My prior TV was a Trinitron Wega HDTV and this one's pretty close on black level and contrast.

Does anybody know what is the actual videosize of 300' ?

Maybe someone can dig out the disc and put it in the BD-Rom and check it.

prob right around 30gb plus the size of a lossless pcm track, tho i'm not sure how much space the extra supplement material on the hd-dvd takes up.
