Immortal Beloved BD owners, help!

I just purchased Immortal Beloved BD which only has Dolby TrueHD 5.1 Surround (48kHz / 3.0 Mbps).

My surround processor is a Sony SDP-EP9ES and is an old Dolby Digital processor and does not have analog in nor does it have HDMI in. My processor only has optical in and coax in.

I have a PS3 backordered so I cannot test it out yet but...I searched and read in another NIN BD thread that the BD NIN disc has an embedded Dolby Digital 5.1 track that PS3 was able to output via optical.

My question is does Immortal Beloved behave the same? Is there any way to listen to the soundtrack if I do not have a processor with HDMI or 5.1 analog in?

TIA :)

The PS3 will decode True HD and send it over Optical as 2.0.

Both Dolby TrueHD and DTS-MA will play via their respective "backwards compatible" modes via the Playstation 3's optical out. Yes, in multi-channel. (Dolby Digital @ 640Kbps and DTS @ 1.5Mbps, respectively.)

The only time you will be stuck with 2.0 is if you play a disc's multi-channel PCM track. The PS3, regretably, does not offer a mode to encode the multi-channel PCM to, say, DTS 1.5Mbps... which can be passed via optical. This really is only an issue if the disc doesn't have an identical non-PCM version of the track on it. (For example, Kung Fu Hustle has only one original 5.1 chinese track on it... and it's PCM 5.1 only.)

Wow, thank you guys for the quick replies. So it sounds like in this particular case I will be good to go! That makes me feel better about my purchase !

But it does sound like if I run into a BD with PCM 5.1 only, I will be stuck with 2.0 . I guess in that case I 'll have to use Pro Logic on my Sony SDP-EP9ES.

Hope you all enjoy some great HD movies this long weekend!

i dont think there are any BDs with just PCM 5.1, you won't ever get stuck w/o a surround track on a disc, only lossless tracks.

kung fu hustle is a bit of a special case b/c it is a foreign movie. instead of including a chinsese dolby 5.1 track, they only had DD5.1 tracks in the english dub form, maybe spanish and french as well. nonetheless a 5.1 track that can be passed via optical/coax is indeed included.

there shouldnt be any single disc that requires hdmi/analog out to get digital surround sound.

jkcheng122, I made an earlier post re: KoH (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=897898) and it seems because my processor is DD only, I will not be able to get true 5.1 for that particular BD unless I upgrade my processor that can accept DTS at a minimum . So while it's true that KoH does not require hdmi/analog to get digital surround, in my case, I am not able to enjoy true 5.1 because of my DD-only limitation.

I guess my point is, I wish BD had basic DD on all discs at a minimum for folks like me.

(On Kung Fu Hustle... the original chinese mix is significantly better than the dubs. It's a shame they didn't include a non-PCM version for non-HDMI folks. Oh, well.)

I do wish that at least the PS3 could be set to force conversion to DTS or Dolby Digital for compatibility reasons. I know many owners that still use optical and won't be upgrading anytime soon.

The Xbox 360 HD DVD add-on, for example, can be set to convert everything to high bit-rate DTS or Dolby Digital for 100% backwards compatibility. There is no technical reason Sony can't add this feature, too. Of course, I'm sure Sony would love you to upgrade everything to HDMI using Sony products. I guess it won't ever happen... :p

i dont think there are any BDs with just PCM 5.1…The Sopranos on Blu-Ray is 5.1 LPCM only.

wow, i'm not even aware there are receivers that can decode dd via optical but not dts. i think studios assumed anyone buying into bd has a receiver set up capable of at least dts thru optical.

Hopefully older 2.0 movies won't be upmixed to 5.1, so if you can't change your setup, you can still enjoy TrueHD 2.0 via optical.

I have a pretty old but very good Sony ES DD only surround processor (http://www.happymedium.com/sonyep9.htm). If it weren't for DTS only tracks I would not feel the need to upgrade my processor for at least another year or two. All that space and no room for a DD track? Ok, I will stop ranting now :o
