Can anyone explain what the BRAVIA Internet Video Link (http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10151&catalogId=10551&langId=-1&productId=8198552921665090966&categoryId=8198552921644487283) actually is? The information from it's home page is vague and I cannot make heads or tails of it at all. Is this for regular DVD or stream HD DVD content?

I believe it is a box to allow Japanese Bravia users to download and/or stream video material. I'm afraid I don't know whether it is HD, SD or sub-SD in quality - but I believe initial roll-out is confined to Japan.

Interesting, it appears there is no online movie website is in place yet to take advantage of it (none that I've found yet).

This seems to have more info - though from the announcement rather than launch :

Got one. The integration is great, though I'd like to see more content. There's a website that looks like it's going to provide more functionality at some point, at http://internet.sony.tv. Right now, all it seems to do is provide an alternate way to delete saved links/favorites. I also did a port scan on the device, and it turns out it runs a web server on port 9784. HTTP header says it's "Callisto Debug Server v0.2". There's no default page though, and I haven't been able to find one yet, after guessing at a few potential names. Using telnet returned an error saying "Media Renderer does not implement this method:". Anyone know more? :)

It is amazing how little information there seems to be out there in terms of what this thing can do. I have mine on order, should have it by friday. I get that one can watch video from online partners.... I'd love to be able to use this to pull video off of my server as well. Not sure if this can be done via RSS feeds or not... some sites hinted at this.

No (easy) way to get your own video on it yet. While the welcome message you get when you start it up tells you to go to the website (internet.sony.tv) to setup your own custom video links, there's no functionality available there (yet) to do so.

The weather and traffic page from Yahoo is nice, and it's handy having it right on the remote. The news they provide is fair... There's seven sources, one of which is their legal agreements, and while some are updated fairly regularly, the sports one hasn't been updated for over a month... The last story faded off it, and it's an empty channel now, at least for me.

I really want to like this, the integration with my TV is great, but it's not quite there yet on content and functionality. It is upgradable though (got an update when I first plugged it in, actually) so I'm hoping to see more and better things soon. :)

Still no luck on the web server on port 9784. There must be something there somewhere though...

Or have any news on it?

Thanks.

I noticed you can now link your Yahoo account a couple days ago. I did, and while I've got access to a Yahoo channel of video's I don't think was there before (with some decent content) it doesn't seem to have much that I found in the way of customization yet.

I wonder if they will ever get youtube, or apple's movie trailers.

After that I would pick it up.

Did you add this stuff by adding content to your Yahoo home page? All of this is still so fuzzy. You would think that they'd have more detail somewhere.

Ok, maybe I'm missing it, but it doesn't seem like there's any customization available through Yahoo, yet... I added 3 videos to my favorites on Yahoo, but it doesn't look like that makes them available anywhere on my TV.

Has anyone viewed any HD content with the link?

Is it full screen, choppy?

What kind of connection are you using.

Just brought a KDL32S3000 and and thinking about adding this but there's not many reviews out there to see if it's worthwhile or a flash in the pan.

I haven't seen any yet but I'm a little leery of HD content to a unit that doesn't have a hard drive for buffering/storage. I have a fairly big pipe (6 meg down) coming in to my house but it still takes a while for my directv on demand HD to flow down (probably a hour for a half hour segment, and from what I read this is better than most). Since this unit does not have a hard drive there is no way that the average home user could get HD content. I think the proof is in the pudding... most of the video out there is downsized.

lmengel
11-15-07, 08:29 AM
I would think that the HD content would be offered as compressed, h264 or something like what ABC.com full screen offers. Don't really know, but most of yahoo vids, etc are really low rez. Don't see the point of streaming weather info, that's what the weather channels 4. Traffic info for me in smallville USA is irrelevant.

Well, I just found something very useful:

If you go to the page that lists your video links (says View Video Links on the top), then then change the URL to replace "EditBookmarks" with "NewBookmark", you'll get to a page that allows you to submit custom videos. :)

Just submitted one, and it said it should be available within 5 minutes. Hope it works. :)

Please go into detail. What do you mean by custom video, something off the web or your own?

Interested in what this thing is capable of doing.

Is this anything like what the PS3 has available for web content.

Sony announced Divx support for the PS3, I was hoping this baby would get it also.

Does anyone from Sony monitor this thread or can someone suggest another forum that would be more apropos.

I'm about to RMA this unit.... I just can't see keeping this unit when their are so many other media units out there that do what we'd like them to do and much more. I'm a directv customer and their newest model HD dvr's are starting to offer integration with audio/video/photos. The audio and photo capabilities have been there for quite a while but the're starting to roll out the video as well. For someone that loves to play with this stuff, directv is awesome... anyone can opt in to their beta testing club and download the newest firmware months before it goes national. I had this kind of functionality and other cool stuff like Video on demand months before it happened, and they interact with you through a website so you can give feedback and report bugs.

A little more detail for those that are interested.... this kind of functionality generally requires you to have some software running on your pc. I'm currently using a program called TVersity that manages all of this for me. You simply point it to audio/video that can be on your hard drive or anywhere on the net. You really can create a link to anything, including sites like youtube. You can subscribe to any radio station, rss feed or podcast from anywhere on the net and have it visible on your device. And the device can be just about anything... a directv receiver, PS3, XBox, iPhone, etc. It couldn't have been easier to set up. On top of all of that, I can access my entire media collection through the browser from anywhere. I'd been using a program called Twonky for quite a while but this one seems to handle video better. All of this software appears as a UPNP device (plug and play) on your network for very easy access.

Anyway, as I said a few posts back, the biggest drawback to this unit is that it doesn't have a hard drive and that alone will limit functionality. For $300 you would think that you'd get a lot more.

I guess it must be a Japanese thing, but if they could give it some attributes of a sysabas player. Instead of a HD, they could use a memory stick. I love the small footprint and use of the TV's remote.

Great info, so this is an undocumented feature?

Sounds like a little bit of work, but doable. Is it easy to navigate with your remote?

Were any of the video you played in HD? Was playback smooth?

I think Sony needs to add DIVX HD to seal the deal.

That's a nice find Jerrith, I'm amazed that nobody noticed this sooner.

Anyway, I dropped mine in the mail this morning - I bit the bullet and took the restocking fee. Who knows, maybe I'll be back in a year if they cut the price in half and add the ability to subscribe to other feeds. As Leslie said, the ability to use the tv remote was nice but this not a selling point for me personally because I have a harmony remote. Good luck to all of you. - Adam

That's another good question. I'm assuming that because this is a proprietary unit that the consumer would be at their mercy to add codecs, and I'm assuming the only way to do this is through firmware upgrades since codecs will always be changing for formats like Divx.

My Bravia Link came bundled with my TV when I bought it back in November. Initially it was pretty sweet but now I'm starting to realize it's pretty obsolete. If you have a PS3, there is no reason to get this. The only upside I can see to having this hardware is for firmware upgrades to your TV (if there ever are any) and the gift card to Amazon that it came with. Other than that, I wouldn't waste my money.

Just got a Sony TV with Bravia Link and am wondering what people are using as a wireless bridge? Should I buy an 802.11g device or upgrade my router to 802.11n and buy a compatible bridge? If 802.11g is good enough I would just as soon not spend extra money. I plan to test the Link out with a CAT-5 cable for now, but I have to run 40 feet of cable from TV location to demark.

Also I cannot get Firefox 3.0.6 to install Send2MyTV plugin. Getting error screen from FF "Send2MyTV" will not be installed because it does not provide secure updates." Any thoughts on that one? Tried opening file direct and that does not work. Also tried installing the tweaked version and no joy there either. Got the IE version of Send2... to install, but cannot get very far until I have internet link established.

Thanks

I use a wrt54gl with dd-wrt (3rd party firmware) as the wireless bridge for the Bravia link. The same bridge also connects the TV, BD player, and game console.

I think the Bravia Internet link (software 1.1.29.27) is buggy. Too often, I get the blue screen message, by triggering network activity via scrolling back and forth among video thumbnails.

"The service you were attempting to acquire
could not be accessed at this time.
Try refreshing services in the Internet Video
settings menu or restarting, reference code (1A)"

Further network activity gets stuck on the same error. Recovery requires rebooting the Bravia video link unit. As far as I can tell, the problem is with the video link unit, and not the wireless bridge. I will be hooking a PC up to the bridge later to verify.

That said, I don't think the Bravia video link is worth the money at this time. There's a lot of potential, if Sony would release better or more open software for the module. At the present time, all the content is available with a PC anyway, and the PC connects to the TV too.

I registered and linked up my Bravia Internet Video to Amazon on Demand and Sony. Numerous channels show up fine in XMB's video scroll menu except Amazon's so I can't browse the Amazon online store. Where does the Amazon show up on XMB menu? (P.S. I've hooped through several things-rebooting device, relinking to Amazon, to no avail. Emailed support to Sony and Amazon and each points to the other to get support!)

P.S. I did update the software to 1.1.29.27, but noted in someone's earlier post it might be "buggy." Could this be the culprit?

Amazon shows as one of the video channels without registration or linking. If the channel doesn't show, then try unlinking the amazon service for your device at internet.sony.tv. Then work on the problem from there.

That said, my last attempt to link yahoo to an yahoo account broke My Page. More specifically, the weather pane just reported service unavailable. Unlinking the yahoo service fixed it. ..And I haven't figured out the benefit linking the yahoo service either.

Thanks asi7. Yeah, even after unlinking at internet.sony.tv with no success, I persisted in emailing support to both Sony and Amazon. Somewhere between them my registration got setup correctly and the Amazon On Demand channel finally showed up. The viewing experience on some videos I purchased (thanks to the promo gift) isn't bad, given that my broadband is zippy enough. (Am on Mac OS so can't offload my purchases, so future buying not likely.) Am hoping Amazon will provide some previews on the Bravia video link--lack of previews doesn't make renting and purchasing from the TV a good experience.

The plugin isn't compatible with FF3.x and the info at http://internet.sony.tv doesn't indicate they have any plans to make it compatible. I kept a copy of FF2.x installed on my PC specifically to run this plugin. IMO, that's preferable to running IE.

AFAIK, the only benefit of linking Yahoo to the BIVL is that when linked, the "My Page" shows weather from all of the cities you have defined as favorites for weather on your "My Yahoo" page. Otherwise, it only shows weather for 1 city. Probably not a huge advantage, and it may even be a disadvantage if you don't care about weather elsewhere when you're in front of your TV at home. ;)

It should work on a Mac as the add-on isn't Windows specific. It just requires Firefox to be installed.

Technically all the add-on does is build the URLS that connect to the Bravia Link. If you wanted to you could build the links by hand to add videos.

Sorry. I just can't resist. Is this the product? (http://www.theonion.com/content/video/sony_releases_new_stupid_piece_of) WARNING! lot's of "F" words!

It's not that bad. :p

I'm just trying to determine if it's normal for the thing to occasionally reboot (it did it while I was watching a video) or if mine is defective.

Yes, I have also encountered content from time to time that causes unhelpful error messages or crashes (reboots).

My unit has auto updated itself recently to BIVL software version 1.2.0. I haven't noticed any feature changes yet. Hopefully, the new release is more stable/reliable than the earlier ones.

I think I'm going to call Sony about this. The BIVL software seems to have some kind of memory leak in it since it gets slower and slower then longer it's been up. Eventually it just reboots itself and the process repeats.

Why not just power cycle the box every so often to reset it?

Do you feel optimistic about being able to speak with someone at Sony who knows what a "memory leak" is?

I don't need to do that since the box power cycles itself.

Sony may not know what a "memory leak" is, but they should be able to get the drift based on my description.

Personally I don't think they are really up on supporting the BIVL in the U.S. Their web site seems to have been partially constructed and then never finished and there are features listed in the manual, that don't exist in the BIVL. It would also be nice if the US version could run applications like the Japan version can.

I'm only luke warm on this piece of gear as it came with a tv bundle that I purchased for a great price... Had the TV now for 10 months and haven't yet set up this bravia link. One question that I did have is I wanted to be able to run the video and audio through my AVR that has HDMI switching, but it appears that I will need to attache it to the TV and only be able to use it through the tv xmb rather than the xmb on my AVR... does this make sense? Thanks.

It seems to sense what HDMI port it is connected to since when I change the HDMI port it's connected to, it automatically figures it out on it's own. As such I think it can only be used by being directly connected to the TV. You could try running it through an AVR, but since there's no 5.1 audio as far as I can tell, it's probably not worth it.

Since Amazon HD on the roku box now has 5.1 audio, I'm hoping that the BIVL might add it. I'm not holding my breath though.

On a side note, I think they added another channel or two on the BIVL. I don't remember "MyPlay" being there the last time I checked. They disable "DailyMotion" though (it never worked anyway).

Finally they slightly optimized the "OPTIONS" menus. They now moved all the different items that used to be in the menu into a "Categories" sub menu. It makes the OPTIONS menu a bit more useful. Now if they'd only add the "Save Link" option that the manual says is already there.

That and update the videos.

I got around this by using the audio out jacks on my XBR into my receiver Aux input. Sounds pretty good actually. It would have been nice if Sony would have provided a better input/output strategy.

Has anyone been able to recently get this hidden page to work? I received a BIVL with a TV purchase, and would like to be able to add my chosen content. The PC to TV software seems set up correctly, and the website recognizes my BIVL unit. Links I create via PC to TV show up on my BIVL, although they report a "Network Error" The built in links all function fine.

I'd like to see if the hidden page functions any differently, but when I replace the EditBookmarks with NewBookmark, the web page reports back that the template is not available.

The URL from my browser is;

//internet.sony.tv/customer/template/bookmarks,EditBookmarks.vm/sn/xxxxxxx/pc/xxxxxxxx/pp/bookmarks,ViewBookmarks.vm/di/1?lang=en

I assume the EditBookmarks, in bold is what should be replaced with NewBookmark.

Anyone had success, or suggestions?

I am attached to my wireless network with a Linksys print server, which has 4 ports, and functions as a wireless bridge. This also connects my BlueRay player, and Dish Network DVR, which all work fine.

Thanks,

Kyle:confused::confused:

The new bookmark link still works for me. Make sure you use "NewBookmark" and not "NewBookmarks".

There's now an menu item under Video that allows searching for videos. It searches all videos except Amazon and YouTube.

There's also an activation menu under Network, which allows easier activation.

Finally the http://internet.sony.tv site has been updated.

I'm having same issue. Links go to unit and look OK - except for that fact (in my case) there is NO thumbnail photo which makes me suspicious. Before I found the information on installation myself I wrote SONY and they replied that this was in beta and would not provide details on using (though it's in manual). Have you (anyone?) resolved the 'Network Error" issue. I've tried both IE and FF plug-ins.

A picture of the page to add videos, with the info about what formats it accepts. BTW, in practice the 5 minutes appeared to be instant, or nearly so. (No longer than the time it took for me to walk downstairs to my TV.)
Am I missing something? Cannot find url. Is it posted elsewhere> Thanks!

It's been posted a few times already (one in the post you quoted above). The easiest way to get to the page is to log in to https://internet.sony.tv and click "View Video Links" and then View "Links".

The URL of the page that comes up should start with https://internet.sony.tv/customer/template/bookmarks%2CEditBookmarks.vm/....

Simply change the "EditBookmarks" in the URL to "NewBookmark". You can then bookmark the page that comes up.

I just posted this in the DMX-NV1 thread. It should be of interest to folks here, too.

Netflix went online in the DMX-NV1 (BIVL) last week! It's a nice addition. With over 300 titles in my instant queue, it's a little cumbersome to slog through the list 24 at a time, but it works.

Also, Sony will be offering a (free?) stream on the BIVL of its movie "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs" between Thanksgiving and New Years Day. This is being offered before the DVD is released. A nice perq for us early adopters. :)

There's been an addition in the audio section on the BIVL. In addition to Slacker, the list of audio content now includes access to hundreds of NPR podcasts.
