I am looking to buy an HD receiver for my comcast service and was wondering if anyone can give me some advice as to which one to get. I am looking for one with a CableCard slot and is not a DVR. I don't plan on recording too much, just want to watch HDTV. I'd really appreciate any suggestions on which non-DVR HDTV receiver to get, or if there is no such thing, which DVR HDTV receiver is best.
Thanks in advance
I've never heard of a non-DVR HD receiver with CableCard. Any HD receiver that has a QAM tuner should be able to receive whatever unencrypted channels that Comcast provides in your area (probably just the local broadcast HD stations, and maybe not all of them), but if you want anything beyond that, you'll need to rent a box from Comcast.
There are HD DVRs with CableCard: The Tivo Series 3 and Tivo HD (which of course require a Tivo subscription) and the Sony DHG-HDD250 and 500 (which don't). However, the Sony units receive their program guide and clock-setting data via analog broadcast signals, which will disappear in February 2009, and there's no way to set the clock manually, which will make it difficult to schedule timer-style recordings.
