Hi all,
looking for some advice. I have an opportunity to pick up a Mitsibushi HD-5000 processor for cheap. This box has a QAM HD receiver, switcher and scaler in one box. It has inputs for HD (1080i) component and 3 firewire inputs amongst others. I am curious if I could pipe the output from a direct tv or Dish box via component into the HD-5000 then record it via one of the firewire interfaces to my JVC or Mits D-VHS decks.

Would this work? if so it sounds like a great way to record hd sat.

pls advise.

thx,
Jim

No, of course it wouldn't work.
That would require a high-definition mpeg2 encoder inside HD-6000 (I'm sure you mean 6000, not 5000).

no not the 6000, the 5000.

I would assume that it has one built in. It is used to talk to Mits plasmas. I assume the firewire inputs could be feed from a mits deck and then output via the 5000 DVI to the TV? would allow my non firewire projector/tvs to see a the firewire output from the mits deck.

Yes, it might have a HD mpeg2 DEcoder, but it does NOT have a mpeg2 ENcoder for HD signal.
So any component video you feed into it is only switched, but not transcoded into another format.
You'd need something like http://www.edirol.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=222&Itemid=424 to convert HD component to 1394 in realtime.
There's also a box that costs slightly less, but still in the 3-5k range. Probably not what you're looking for. (I can't find the link, its in one of 1080i capture threads here).

Convergent Design (http://www.convergent-design.com/) is planning to release a $3K box and a $5K box.
