I have direct TV (non hd receiver) and a new 40 inch Samsung HDTV.

I havent ordered the HD reciever yet because there are so few HDTV channels broadcat on Direct TV.

I do get HDTV right over the air with a very strong signal for free using a small Phillips antenna.

Now my question is what is the best way to connect? Component, Composite, or S video cables? I was using Svideo but noticed the rca composite gave a better picture. I dont have component cables so I cant try those. Should I pick some up? Do they give a better picture? Thanks in advance. :)

Unless that SDTV DBS receiver has component outputs - that would be a real waste of money.

As far as PQ with what you got - go with what looks best to you. Back when S-Video first came out, when comb filters were either non-existent or not nearly as good as today's - there was a real difference between S-Video and composite. Now, with good comb filters and "large screen" TVs - maybe the best picture IS the composite - at least it maybe hiding more of the compression defects.

BTW - the "theoritical" scale on worst to best is composite, S-Video, component, DVI/HDMI.

What about for my dvd player? Would your recommend component over composite or S video? Thanks a bunch. I never even heard of component cables till yesterday.

Yes.... component would be the better than composite or S-Video.

The best S-Video can do is 480i
Component out is usually Progressive, and starts at 480, 720, or 1080.
You're always better off with Component output.
