Hi all, I would like to know what people use as their power conditioner/surge protector in their home theater system?

I am looking at the monster product but they look really expensive and I heard that they are overpriced. I also looked at Rotel Rlc 1080 which has the UPS built in. Has anyone use the Rotel RLC 1080? I also looked at the product from APC which looks the same as the Rotel RLC 1080 but only has 600 watt capacity . I wonder if that would be enough for a home theater.

Any other brand that anyone would recommend?

thanks

Check out Furman products. I like their commercial line conditioners and sequencers, but they also have a reference line if you don't mind paying for looks.

Hi all, I would like to know what people use as their power conditioner/surge protector in their home theater system?

Right now I'm using APC products to protect/run my C/Ku-Band satellite equipent and website computers and other misc A/V gear.

If you go to the APC web site, as an example I bought the snazzy unit with LCD display (BN1200LCD) and it's telling me that with three of my computers and not even a full load, it will only run 9 minutes. Under full load, the website says 6.9 minutes.

To last hours is going to cost big bucks. You might be better off putting in a gas generator and power stuff in the house with it, using UPS boxes to keep stuff up until you get it started and switched in. To really be snazzy, you get one of those diesel/ac motor/generator UPS setups. Had those in the service, as the equipment I worked on had to be running 24/7. Of course, in Scotland, the power as wrong (240@50 Hz, so the motor/generator also did AC power conversion :D Obvisously that is overkill for home usage. The point is, whatever you are looking to do, will be partically controlled by the amount that you are willing to spend. If you just need to be able to bring things down gracefully, because the power will be out longer than expected, then simple 1500VA models will suffice. If you want to be able to continue watching your movie/show for the next hour and crank the stereo while doing it, you are going to need a generator.

I purchased the APC J10, ordered it via Custom Networks Inc (www.msei.com) - they were recommended by APC. They beat prices I found on Net at the time.

Just disconnected a few things like one power speaker, and one mono amp,and the 5ch amp...I guess it was too much of a strain on the J10....I guess I would need another one:confused:

My HE installer recommended the same (or similar) item... here's the link:
http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=195291

It's a Belkin PureAV™ Home Theater Battery Backup with AVR Technology. He can get it for $250. What do you all think? Is it really necessary? This is not a dedicated home-theater set-up. I'm installing a 1080p 50" plasma, surround speakers, receiver, and up-converting DVD player in my family room. Can I get away with a less expensive surge protector or is the battery back-up and noise reduction a good idea? Will it really make a perceptible difference in picture and audio quality?

Thanks for the advice!

I am using that same one. I really like it. I don't think it will make a noticeable difference in audio or video quality, unless you have really crappy power. I like it for peace of mind. The battery back up isn't really necessary for your equipment ( I need it for my projector) but it is nice when the power flickers while watching something and you don't even notice it.

You can pick up the silver faced version on ecost.com right now for $166.99 plus shipping.

I agree with ya. For his setup is a nice thing to have but not necessary like it is for a projector to allow proper cooling for the bulb. I personally think like you it depends on what type of power you have or if your subject to brown or black outs. At my house the lights dim slightly when the wife turns on her blow drier. I plan on having a battery backup for my future basement HT but the unit I linked to earlier will be for a "normal" tv type set up in the kids area.
