View Full Version : DirecTV Reciever Questions
Skippman 09-03-07, 10:31 AM I have two HD Receivers. One HD-DVR and a standard HD receiver.
I currently have the standard HD Receiver (H20) connected to my 65" Mitsu DLP via component and the HD-DVR (HR20) connected to my old school 46" Mitsu CRT Rear-Pro via component.
I've recently come into possession of another HR20. I'm also moving my home theater into my new home theater room. So, to that end, I'd like to replace my H20 with my spare HR20. Here's my questions.
1.) Can I just hook up the HR20 in place of the H20?
2.) I'm already paying the DVR fee to DirecTV, will I have to pay double the fee if I hook up another reciever?
3.) Can my dish even handle two HD-DVR's at the same time?

1. Yes, you will need 2 lines to handle both tuners, but it would work with 1
line.
2. One DVR fee covers whatever # of DVRs that you have.
3. It has the capacity for 4 lines which is what you want for 2 HR20s.
Skippman 09-03-07, 11:58 AM Excellent. My last question is do you think they'll hastle me about activating a DVR that I didn't buy through DirecTV?

No. It's none of their concern where you got it, as long as you pay the monthly fee.

They'll probably want $20 for a new access card too.

Seems to me it is so much easier and less expensive to lease from Directv. I always get my receivers with little or zero cost (install is free) and Directv will replace the receiver (no charge) if a problem happens. In fact, this Friday I am getting a new HD DVR because I have a problem with my HD DVR.
Skippman 09-05-07, 04:18 PM Well normally I'd agree with you but seeing as I already HAVE the second DVR...
Skippman 09-23-07, 12:07 PM I'm pleased to report that activating the second DVR, while cumbersome, wasn't to terrible. The gentleman who worked on the phone with me seemed confused as to how I could have a DVR that I didn't buy directly from them, but after providing the serial number, model number, and card number he was glad to activate it.
On the plus side as this DVR (HR20-700) will be replacing a normal HD-Receiver I'll not be increasing my bill at all because, as someone pointed out earlier, the DVR fee only applies once, regardless of the number of DVR's you've connected.
In addition, the rep arranged to have an installer come out and run me two new coax leads down from the dish to my home theater room so I don't have to do it myself. This was at no cost. While the works not yet been performed, I hope it goes well. I'll post once it's completed.
Now, I guess I'm going to have to get some new gear for mounting a OTA antenna on the dish's mast as my Terk won't pick up anything in my basement. I plan on using a RG-6 splitter off a Weingard non power antenna to run RG-6 to two diplexers, once for each DVR. Is there a more elegant way to do this?
jbrazjr 09-25-07, 12:59 AM Joed-DTV is charging me for more than one DVR fee. Is this right ? Thanks.

You should only have to pay one DVR fee per account with D*. Although I am not sure how that works if you have a mix of Tivo and non-Tivo DVRs as some of that money is supposed to go to Tivo for the program guide and support.
Ted
Skippman 09-25-07, 10:08 AM NCTED is right. There's one fee regardless of how many DVR's your using UNLESS they're TiVo's.
Anyone use any products from Skywalker? I'm planning on purchasing a dual diplexer from them.

First I had thought about this. So If I dump my HR10 for an HR20 but keep my SD Tivos, I pay double fees?

You can't do that. With the new HD channels coming, diplexing OTA into the signal is not possible. You will need to split the antenna feed and run it all the way to each DVR.
Skippman 09-25-07, 04:47 PM Are you sure about that?
rynberg 09-26-07, 07:51 PM Well, it is possible, but it becomes a very kludgy setup involving placing the BBCs before the diplexers, blah blah.
Much easier and better to just run separate antenna feeds. The new MPEG4 HD channels use the same bandwidth as OTA before the BBC shifts their frequency range.
