View Full Version : Diplexer Problem

Okay, I have a MPEG-4/5LNB dish with three receivers. Two are non-HD and work fine and one is an H20-100 on which I receive the HD package and locals. On that receiver, I have a limited reception problem, limited to: 1) HD broadcasts of MLB Extra Innings games (but not ESPN HD or network HD), and 2) and select other non-HD channels (e.g. 290-298 and a few others).
Furthermore, I have isolated the problem to my diplexer. It serves to split my internet service (Cox cable modem internet) and my DTV signal. I isolated this as the problem by removing the diplexer and cutting my internet service out of the equation and simply running the DTV service directly without the diplexer. Problem solved. All of the affected channels came back perfectly. Of course, that leaves me without my internet service.
So . . . is there some sort of upgraded diplexer I can get to fix this problem so that I can have both fully-functioning DTV and cable internet? DTV came out and replaced the diplexer (and then left it unhooked and pronounced the problem solved, er, without any internet service . . . .), but of course that didn't solve the problem.
Anyone else face this or have any proposed solutions? Thanks!

franknd,

I believe the problem is your 5LNB dish more than the diplexer. I'm not a D* person but I remember reading on the various forums that one cannot use diplexers with them, because they multiplex signal down into the broadcast frequency.

I believe your solution will likely involve running a new run of coax. Hopefully the info I'm giving you is old and there is a better solution.

You can't use diplexors on runs from the new dish to an H20, D* is using a wider frequency range which overlaps the UHF/VHF frequencies. Basically your fix is to run a dedicated line for your cable.

I've been reading about the yet to be released SWM (Single Wire Multiswitch) on one of the other forums. I was going to suggest that as a possible solution, but after reading the OP problem again, I don't think even the SWM would be of help.

So can I or should I expect DirecTV to run the dedicated line at no charge? Makes sense to me that they would since my alternative is to tell them to take their dish and then switch everything over to Cox, including TV. Anyone confronted this dilemma before?

Doubt it, my guess is you just signed a new contract recently too, they'll be happy to disconnect you for a $300 fee.

combining off air with satellite with diplexors is problematic as it is and then trying to combine internet just adds to issues.

run a separate line for internet service and see if the internet provider will accomodate you.

Actually, no. I've been with them for close to 13 years and haven't signed a contract in recent memory. Last one was four years ago when I moved.

When you activated that new MPEG4 receiver, you added 2 more years.
