View Full Version : Standardized Packaging?

One thing that I would really like to see is standard cases for all Blu-rays... I absolutely HATE having all the mismatched packaging that DVD turned into. Especially the fold-out packages, which are absolute crap. Don't mind thinpaks too much, as they are the correct size, just a different thickness.

I really hope that Blu-rays will be more standardized. If they want to do special packaging that's fine, but put a standard Blu-ray case inside so I can pitch it and display the movie alongside all the other discs.

Anybody know if these multi-disc sets will have standard cases (just thicker, like the upcomming Smallville set):

Blade Runner (non-briefcase)
Lost S3
Spider-man set
Close Encounters

It's been fairly easy to get replacement cover art for DVDs (due to the high number of people pirating releases), but I haven't found many good sources of high quality alternate covers of Blu-rays due to their higher resistance to copying. I have no interest in copying, just want to be able to put the damn discs on the shelf and have them line up decently.

Also, anyone know where to buy the multidisc cases shown here:

At least then I could make my own sleeves in some cases...

Thanks

As much as I'd LOVE my collection to have a nice uniform look, it'll never happen.

I love the different size and material...I can't stand the 1 size only that looks like everyone else. I just can imagine our life with everyone wearing the same color underwear!

I'ld be all for uniform standard packaging, or at least give us the choice of including both.

I agree, I hate all the different designs to the box itself...

I gotta chime in here as well. I really prefer all of my discs to be housed in the elite blu-ray cases. I hope Sony does an about-face on Close Encounters and offers in it an elite case. I like the idea of keeping my collection looking as new as the day the shrink wrap was removed. The ability to switch out old, worn cases for shiny new ones outweighs any benefit of original packaging. I am sure many of you have experienced the agony of broken spindles on a few digipak cases. After that happens, it is no longer useful to protect the disc, which is supposed to be its primary function. Why not give the consumer a choice?

i'll take a blu-ray steelbook case over the blu-ray cheap plastic anyday.

My DVD shelves look like crap... why? Because of the unorganization of it all. I have Amaray Keep Cases stuck in with Snapper cases mixed in with custom cases (T2:JD, Lawrence Of Arabia, MIB, "Schindler's List, E.T., etc...).

My TV on DVD shelves look pretty bad too as I have sets that are in Amaray cases sitting next to cardboard cases of various heights and various width.

My High-Def shelf looks a little strange with the red and blue cases, but looks very organized. I purchased my first HD DVD title in months ("Heroes: Season One") which is of course, the odd duck out. While I'll probably pass due to waiting for the EVENTUAL Blu-ray release, BSG:S1 on HD DVD later this year is once again, different from the Heroes set... as well as ST:TOS:S1.

Now Blu-ray seems to be joining HD DVDs lead in releasing custom cases for their product with CEOT3K which appears to be in the same type of case as "Schindler's List" on DVD. Lost: S3 also appears to be in a cardboard case, but I'm hoping it's just a slip-on case (ala MI trilogy set) or their slide-on case (ala POTC).

I'm sorry... but enough is enough.

That is the exact same reason why I'm avoiding the brief case edition of Blade Runner. It's just not worth the paper cardboard case.

All the Australian Blu-ray cases are exactly the same. They are the same length and height as the USA cases but they are twice as thick and stronger. Even the 2 disc sets like Pirates of the Caribbean have the same cases. The USA cases are horribly cheap.

Anyone know a source for the European BD cases?

Since US cases are thinner, the US artwork fits in a Euro case, but the reverse is not true, and the center hub of my copy of The Island was broken upon receipt. :(

To me, strength is not much of an issue... provided that replacability is there. If a standard Blu-ray case breaks for some reason (I don't see that happening unless someone sits on it or unusual pressure is placed on the hub or something), it can simply be replaced.

But with all the junk paper box cases this is impossible.

I really hate this...
