Anyone have any experience resetting some of the default settings?http://broadband.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/broadband.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=17653&p_created=1174587780&p_sid=PRQ-mQKi&p_lva=&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9zb3J0X2J5PSZwX2dyaWRzb3J0PSZwX3Jvd19jbnQ 9MzMmcF9wcm9kcz01OTIsNTk5JnBfY2F0cz0mcF9wdj0yLjU5OSZwX2N2PSZ wX3BhZ2U9MQ**&p_li=&p_topview=1

A tv tech reset my DCT 6200 set-top box to a stretched or zoom setting for my 32" hdtv 4x3 tv, it's a 4.75 yr old Toshiba 32HFX72. This was done because the hd channels picture had suddenly deteriorated to an unviewable state. Other than sending the defective circuit board back to the factory to be repaired, the tech changed a setting to give me back a clear though larger size picture. Anybody know what's going on?

The cost to replace the part is about +/- CDN$475, but it's not available 'cause all the manufacturers have stopped servicing & carrying parts for crt tvs. The alternatives described to me, like sending the board to be repaired, are price prohibitive.

Can I assume that, originally, your HD channels appeared on your 4:3 set with top and bottom bars? And your current issue is that your HD channels fill up your 4:3 screen?

Do you have any idea what setting was changed? This Motorola STB Setup Page (http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/How_to_use_a_Motorola_DVR/Setup) may help you understand what may have been changed. Post your current settings.

Turn the Motorola box off and press menu to get more display options. See the page linked above for an explanation of settings.

The problem started when the picture suddenly lost all its sharpness & brightness resulting in a soft/bland appearance. There were also nearly horizontal 1" black striped bands across the screen - see attached photo.

The user settings read
4:3 PAN SCAN for TV TYPE,
480I for YPbPr OUTPUT &
OFF for 4:3 OVERRIDE

Now, the picture is fine other than it being zoomed or stretched.

I'm not an expert - but those settings suggest to me that your cable box is now only outputting a 480i Standard Def 4:3 centre-cutout picture? You may have an HDTV - but your box is not feeding it an HD signal?

Sneals, you can give up your day job & become a tv tech consultant!

I changed the user settings of
4:3 PAN SCAN for TV TYPE to 4:3 LETTERBOx
480I for YPbPr OUTPUT to 1080I
OFF for 4:3 OVERRIDE to 480I
and now I'm looking at a perfect HD picture.

Now, how do you explain the tv set correcting itself? If you look at the picture attached above, all that has self corrected itself & the tv set is no longer broken. Must be magic.
