This thread is intended for people with 720p/1080i displays

We know, 1080p rules, wish we could afford it.

BUT ANYWAYS,
I have had my PS3 and 360w/HD-AO, set to 720p because when I bought my set I was given the advice to do so. I tinkered with it during gaming (before my HDM obession began) and it looked a lil better in 720p so I kept it and went on. I got the add-on after the PS3 and was a little disappointed in the HD-DVD PQ. I changed the setting to 1080i and they just as good as the blu-rays. I changed the PS3 to 1080i and felt that the image suffered.(flickering). The br's in 720p look equal to HD-DVD's in 1080i to me.

This is not to bash either format.

Wondering if it is just my hardware, or is it common for br's to look better at 720p and HD-DVD's at 1080i? Not saying one looks better than the other, but on my set the resolutions on those formats make a BIG difference.

What's the native resolution of your display?

Personally i would have expected them to look identical at 1080i (as no scalling is required on output), but there's the possibility your TV isn't deinterlacing correctly on the PS3 input, hence the difference.

PS if you're interested in getting the most out of your display I'd highly recomend going through a calibration (such as DVE HDDVD or a professional service).

Native res is x728, ie: standard off brand 720p. I do feel the set was a great value and I am happy with it. $400 32"(employee discount:)). The flickering I mentioned is not visible to the untrained eye. My wife said she couldn't really see it. But it is there. The PS3 is HDMI and the HD-DVD is component. Friends with more expensive on brand displays have actually purchased this as a bedroom/other TV. They comment that the blacks looked really good for what I paid. Also impressed with the vivid colors for the price.

Has anyone with a similar set-up experimented and got similar results?
