Man! Just saw a thread about this one... Damn Universal! This is yet another title I would really like to have. Well, I guess I'll just wait and when it finally gets released on Blu, I'll know I am getting a better product :) Universal just needs to hurry and go nuetral!

Spend $200 and then you can buy it on HD DVD.

Do we really need to post about every friggin' movie not available on BD? Live with it. Or get an HD DVD player and enjoy the movie. Sheesh!

And please everyone. Use more informative and specific thread titles. Sheesh, again.

Hopefully Uni goes neutral sooner than later. Of course with Toshiba continueing to be aggressive with free movie deals I may have to go neutral eventually though I'd rather have their titles on blu-ray.

You are asking for the impossible. Just ignore these threads and they quickly fade away. Look at the posting history...there isn't one. That is usually a dead giveaway...

Better yet spend that money on other Blu-ray titles and wait for the inevitable announcement of neutrality from Universal. It's gonna happen.

Keep on waiting then. If you want this film in HD, you have to own HD DVD. There is no way Universal will go neutral so soon after the whole Paramount thing, if ever.

If Universal went neutral tomorrow it might be atleast another year or more until the titles you want are released on BR.

For only a $200 difference (and from 5 to 8 titles for free) no one serious about home media should be missing out on movies for over a year due to format exclusivity.

Even if you favor BR to win the war, just rent your HD exclusives so you can enjoy all titles now.

if it happens it's years away. both formats are here to stay. both have a market, and both markets are growing. One has the fundamentals for long term growth and one doesn't (hint: game consoles are not a long-term growth vehicle).

I wish the bluray group would start a trade in program. Trade in your hddvd player and get a blurayplayer for half off .It would help get this war over sooner.

I wouldn't count on Uni going neutral any time soon. Who knows after the P/DW deal, but before that I was saying next summer at the earliest, likely CES 2009. Now it all depends on what happens with sales, costs, etc over the next year and a half (or so). As the HDM market gets (a little) larger, it will be harder not to support the better selling format.

There are at least a dozen titles from Universal I wanted, but I won't have them unless they launch in BD or BD dies and I buy a HD-DVD player. This war is stupid, but I will not help them to keep it going by supporting both sides... No DVD nor HD-DVD from them to me until they become neutral...

I just watched this via Netflix bluray.
What a throwback to the 1980's, but ya know what?
Simply it was fun watching it with my 2 boys.

For fun I'll add a few screen shots.

What's really sad is that the HD image on their behind the scenes featurette is far superior to the filterered, DNR, and EE mucked up main feature's video.

Ahh, I missed that and the Netflix bluray is already back to them.

If you look past some stuff, definitely the HiDef can be seen.
The GCi is laughable, actually cartoon-ish.
What I also notice is...poor focus, composition, etc in the movie itself.
Still, I like this movie, simple story ....

With today's Politically correctness I wonder if they'd include these lines in the movie today, or cut them from the current version showing on TV..

Was this the longest thread bump ever (2007-2012)?

I found "Last Starfighter" tolerable to watch with a small amount of pseudo-random noise added: whilst it doesn't increase the DNR'd detail, it creates a perception of increased detail.

I wish the studios would stop the Bluray-lite crap they continue to deal out, especially if their bean counters expect anyone to invest in 4k or whatever the next money-spinning gimmick they decide on: the enthusiasts have a long memory and will only take so much.

The GCi is laughable, actually cartoon-ish.

And yet was state of the art and done on a Cray supercomputer.

Wouldn't quite go that far but at the time it was a monumentally groundbreaking film as far as digital VFX goes. I think criticising it today for being "cartoonish" is slightly blinkered.

For the best part of 8 years it was pretty much state of the art.

The film itself is an enjoyable romp and does tie in nicely with a time when video games and arcades were seen as quite cool and not the unsavory couch potato past time they are today.
