hey all,
I just got the vga cables for my 360, but can't figure out what resolution to put my Samsung hpt-5054 on in order to maximize my PQ? I initially tried 1360x768, since that is so close to my sets 1365x768 native resolution, but this resulted in tiny grey bars on the sides of the picture, filling in those 5 pixels. I then tried 1280x720, since this is native for most games, but I found myself with a vertical black bar running up right side of the screen. It seems to me like the TV didn't scale the 720p picture, whcih is very weird because it does so perfectly when connected via component and displaying at 720p. Can anyone help me? I want to have a full screen image, and do not want to have the grey bars on the sides, because of IR worries.

THanks!

Hi, I have the 5064, so pretty much the same TV. 1360x768 is what you want. You will get the 3-pixel wide grey bars on the side because of the slight difference in resolution between your TV and the Xbox VGA output. If it bothers you, you can always switch the sides to black, and then it's pretty invisible.

Your TV doesn't scale VGA at all, that's why people here prefer it. You're getting a direct pixel-for-pixel display of what the Xbox is outputing, which in general gives a better and more responsive picture than component.

If you don't like the bars on the side, then use component because by trying to get your TV to scal the picture and eliminate the bars you're losing the benefits of VGA.

I wouldn't worry about IR at all. The grey bars are designed to prevent it in the first place, and even if that 3-pixel bar faded unevenly over time, are you going to notice it sitting on the couch? If it's really a concern for you, you can run the scrolling pattern on the TV (under the burn-in protection menu) or just use your component cables.

Personally, I leave the grey bars up when playing games--you stop noticing them after a few minutes. For movies I'll change it to black, understanding that over time I may get some IR, but that it probably won't be noticeble since it's 3-pixels at the edge of the screen.

PS--you can't select 1366x768 because it is not a VGA standard resolution.

When you set it to 1280x720, try running "auto sync" (or a similarly feature) in the TV's menu.
