This game looks as good as GT5. With better looking environments.

I'll reserve final judgement until the game is released but there are 2 things about PGR I've always loved..

1) Its fun and gives you more to do in a racing game besides crossing the finish line first.

2) It has always been the most graphically pleasing racer I've played (PGR 1, 2, and 3 all set the graphics bar for me). No I havent played/previewed GT4HD or GT5.. and even so it would be have to be a helluva game to get me drop $700 for a PS3+game. I have played Forza2 and Dirt.. but Forza feels too serious, and Dirt simply doesnt feel fun enough.

Regardless neither of those titles make me smile enough to purchase with PGR4 so close to launching.

Normally I would agree, but, there's just something magical about Microsoft first-party (check the sig). I'm not into racing games, but PGR has always owned graphics-wise. It's actually my choice for a racer, if I had to choose. And, this one I might have to pick up. Is it me or does Forza 2 have lots of jaggies? Even still, Forza 2 was a bit of a let-down after seeing the ads.

two things i hope they fix is softer engine sounds while in the car view. Also i wish SOME tracks were wider....Its old dodging walls every race. Id like to get a real feel for the cars.

that's the same trick they used for ps2's GT4......photo mode. The actual game graphics sucked compared to what was advertised.

GT5 looks like photo mode in real time but I'm still going to reserve judgment on it until I see it for myself.

I don't want to rain on anybody's parade but I saw PGR4 commercials on tv and the graphics didn't look as sharp and detailed as the photo posted....I'm sorry they didn't

by the way that car looks like Burton's Batmobile. ;)

I bought Dirt and passed on Forza 2 for PGR4, hopefully it will live up to the hype. The best PGR was on the Dreamcast, have been a fan since. PGR2 on the Xbox relied to heavily on the kudos, made it not fun, a little too challenging for my taste.

That's my concern with this one, since all in-game purchases are made with kudos.

Who's to say that the shots that we have seen of GT5 are actually real time?

PGR's (and even Forza 2's) environments are FAR more detailed than the single environment I have seen in GT5. Flat, single polygon trees do not impress.

Video compression can blur video. A TV commercial isn't really the best measure.

Can't wait for this game, the PGR series is probably my fave. So much more fun than your typical race 1st to the finish line, all about style. And I love the Kudos in the game. I finished PGR3 and got lots of cars simply because I love to drift through turns and NOT hit a wall or another car just to win.

My my what a spoiled lot we have become. You thought PGR3's graphics *sucked*? You mean the game that had you racing in the closest thing we've come to a photo-realistic environment so far?? That PGR3??

I'd love to know what you consider to be good graphics in a racing game then....

Again...what are you comparing it to...what do you consider to be a "good looking racer". Don't Say the GTHD demo, the only thing even remotely "photo realistic" about that game are the cars, the tracks they are running on looks like a GT4 leftover running in high rez.

He actually was talking about GT4.

But yeah, there were a lot of blogs before the 360/PGR3 launch that were posting articles about how the PGR3 screen shots must have actually been photos of those locations, and not computer generated, let alone generated at 60fps.

Talk about some flattering remarks!

In PGR3, look to the side when you are driving in NYC. Check out the draw distance for the streets that you are driving by. Absolutely gorgeous. :)

Polyphony has never been one to release deceiving screenshots or videos during development, which is great because it allows you to accurately track their progress.

I enjoyed PGR3 quite a bit although I too didn't like the "Kudos" system. Forces you to use power slides and such just to unlock certain cars...maybe it's just me but it's hard to do those with the racing wheel...

Forza 2 is also great but I almost wish cars were MORE difficult to get. Heck, I was buying R1 cars for $5,000 credits at time at level 10...I think there need to be level restrictions.

The picture posted of PGR4...almost looks like a video clip...but maybe I'm still not used to "current generation" graphics yet.

PGR3 game runs at 60fps but displays at 30. If that makes sense.

Also PGR3's version of the nurb is retarded compared to Forza....I hope they improve the PGR4 version by 100000000.

I never said PGR3's graphics sucked and you're completely right regarding the GTHD demo, I didn't think too much of it specially after all the hype.

What I consider excellent graphics in a racer is the F1 racing pro for the ps3, it almost looks photo realistic. As for GT5 prologue, like a said before I am going to reserve judgment on it until I play the actual game.

So i take it, if I'm not into Kudos or hate drifting, this game isn't for me? If I drive "normal" then, I'd probably get better lap times and win? ...but that wouldn't matter because I'd lose by way of lack of Kudos?

Just trying to understand the premise of the game.

HeadRusch
09-07-07, 10:20 AM
The single player game has you doing different things...Kudos challenges for example, where you have to do the drifting thing (very easy in PGR games from the 3rd person view).......then do normal racing, etc.

But online Kudos, at least in PGR3, didn't exist really....it was all about straight up racing....I mean if you were 20 carlengths ahead you could take some crazy powersliding corners just to show off :D But if you did that in a tight race you'd just lose.

I was disappointed that PGR3 didn't have some way to determine who won the race by kudos, like an online Kudos challenge...all they'd have to do is make sure you passed track checkpoints in a certain amount of time (so you didn't wind up just doing endless donuts at the starting line to rack up points)....but that didn't happen.

Online PGR racing would be cool if the way to win was not only by coming in first but by doing it with lots of powerslides, near misses, 2 wheel airbornes (hit the bump strips at speed on a corner) etc....

Oh and sorry to the guy I thought was criticizing PGR3...I misread your post. PGR3's only fault is that its not a full 1280x720 rez, and it looks a little low rez if you look into the track distance...thats my only real gripe about the game.

Well it needs more tracks.

There has been a lot of emphasis placed on proper driving also. So if your hit the lines well you'll get "kudos" points and as you link up corner after corner you build up more kudos. Ofcourse the way the game engine is, doesn't take a lot to get it sideways.......

^^Thanks guys, that sounds like a lot of fun! At the end of the day, who knows I may learn to enjoy drifting, as long as I'm not forced to do it.

Daekwan
09-07-07, 11:16 AM
As Robert said.. you get points from excellent driving techniques too..

From what I remember you can get Kudos from extreme braking, perfect apexes, staying on the race line, drafting, passing/overtaking cars, outbraking other cars, and of course clean sections meaning you didnt hit the wall/curb.

Trust me.. the Kudo's system has always set this game apart. Between that and the graphics. It really gives you more to concentrate on besides crossing the finish line first.

You can even set it up to determine where you think you'd place in a race. If you go for 2nd.. and you get 2nd place.. its enough to advance you to the next the race.

There are also time trial events, speed camera events, top speed events, overtaking events, drifting events, etc etc..
