I must say that Day One goes to HD-DVD. They actually made an announcement that is a big deal and could be a huge shift. They are going to advertise HD-DVD like crazy on Sunday Night Football on NBC (not suprising given their relationship with Universal). Thats a big deal.

What does Sony do?

Announce another expensive bluray player. Good god.

Here is what the BDA should do:
Announce 1.1 or 2.0 players and SOON

Announce a lower price on all 1.0 players or hell even make a 1080i/720p player for cheap.

Im sure all of these expensive players are fantastic in terms of quality, but I am extremely disappointed that bluray has failed to hit (or at least take a swing at) HD-DVD were it would hurt the most: Price of the players.

HD-DVD was able to hit bluray were it hurt: studio support.

Bluray had BETTER do the same.

CEDIA score:
HD-DVD : 1
Bluray: 0

All of the above is coming from a bluray fanboy.

ANY BD 1.1 players shown at CEDIA that are ready to ship yet? Just checking...

I think HD DVD will win day two also...

Alright, call me an HD DVD fanboy, but this is the first half of the first day. I like what I'm hearing from my side, yet I'd be foolish indeed were I not braced for coming BDA announcements. HD DVD seems to have shot it's load right off the bat.

For both camps I wish more DF players were in the works at better prices.

I don't think the average consumer has any idea about 1.0 versus 1.1. The lack of 1.1 players will have little to no effect on this format war...it's just not on the radar of the average consumer.

As for the OP, I don't see how you think an ad-campaign on Sunday Night Football is such a big win. While Sunday night football may happen to be what you watch a lot, if you look at the viewership numbers, there are lots of other shows that pull larger market share. I see blu-ray advertising all over the place, every night of the week during a lot of highly rated television series. Sunday night football will only be once per week.

While it's certainly better than not advertising at all, I don't think it will even bring HD DVD even close to the market-exposure that blu-ray is generating with their ad placement. I'm sure blu-ray has plenty of good advertising plans as well, but they probably never really considered them something to brag about to the public.

I think the day went to the LG combo player. It's the only memorable thing I read about today.

They won't care until they buy software that they can't get to do everything the package promises. Eventually it will be an issue, perhaps even requiring studios to say "you need 1.1 or higher" on a BD case just like computer-program software does.

I'm in the blu but Sony better do something quick before loosing everything, it's just my luck that as soon as I buy a ps3 and all was fine and dandy...BOOM!! Paramount's announcement and now everything is slowly shifting toward the red side.

I'm starting to hate Sony again.

Darn right day one belongs to HD DVD. They are not only continuing the 5 free movies, but also including 2 great movies with the purchase of a Gen3 player. (one with IME/IF so the buyer gets to experience these new features right away)

You can laugh all you want about that ST Phaser remote but there are millions of ST fans and many will be in the "I got to HAVE it" mode. Talk about passion. These people make the rest of us look normal.:o

We filled out the low end with the Venturer, now we fill out the high end with the Onkyo and Interga. We are still dealing with the EA market.

Both the Samsung and LG DF players sound nice but the wording on the profiles is once agin very "muddy." They both reference BD-J. Neither references DS PIP for the BD side.

Sharp just announced a new BD player - $550 avail. September - Profile 1.0.

Advertising is great - it gets the product in front of the masses. Now all you need is an attractive price - and HD DVD has got it. So Sony will drop the price of the S300 to $399 - 1.0 and NO Ethernet Port. So what about the Disney films coming next year with the IME/IF's? NG on this player.

Robert from VE mentioned 2 other Chinese HD DVD players - one being Alpine and the other Shinco (SP CK). Any word on these?

HD DVD is on a roll and nothing is going to stop it.:D

Nothing is shifting anywhere. Don't fall for the fanatics that routinely post on this forum.

Merrick97:

I think the BDA got into the habit of making every little announcement, no matter how irrelevant, go with a big bang. HD DVD, on the other hand, kept a cooler approach. Not making so many useless announcements. Add to that the many many victory calls (when victory is by no means close) and what you have is a community of people laughing... trying to anticipate the next victory call much more than TRUE announcements.

Add to that the fact that one of the few announcements made by the HD DVD camp was of stellar proportions (Paramount/Dreamworks) and now the confirmation of something that was announced a long time ago with no bang at all (the Chinese players).

So I guess the HD DVD "area" seems to be the place to be these days because that's where the real action seems to be. While on the BDA side, everything seems fireworks and excessive hype.

Add to that, the fact that the BDA must be desperately trying to get something Paramount-size, when those things are quite rare (takes months to produce).

Add the poor yields news unofficial news available in the Insider's thread....

There you are.

...Now look at the aggressive responses this same thread has had in the BD section and I must say that you know you are in the wrong side when even your own people fire at you calling you an idiot and a troll.

Are these the people with whom you discuss HD formats?

The lack of 1.1 players will have little to no effect on this format war...it's just not on the radar of the average consumer. If the HD DVD PRG were smart, their ad campaign should exploit the fact that blu-ray is at 1.0, not 1.1, and that HD DVD is "internet ready". The BDA is certainly doing their level best to keep it quiet ;). I see it starting already.

Sunday night football will only be once per week. It's target marketing to males 25-45 years old. These consumers are usually the first to buy hi def toys and are less likely to watch TV series. Having a blu-ray ad during a TV series is less bang for the buck.

Sunday Night Football is one of the most watched programs of the week. Im almost sure its the most watched program on Sunday night. So this ad campaign is a big deal. Also, remember this. Many of the HD display owners in this world are sports fans. I believe NFL football is the most watched sport on tv. I personaly know many people that bought a HD display just to watch football in HD. So it makes sense to have a ad about HD DVD during the most watched game of the week. You are advertising to the people that can actually benefit from HD media.

I don't know, that just sound ridiculous. Who's really gonna care about a stupid remote control?

So uh.. by the way, there's no link or something that I could look at for details on that offer? Preferrably the actual rebate form with full details... Just for curiosity's sake of course.

.

It will when the 1.1 players come out and the press starts reporting that some BD players can not access all the features on the discs. You know that the HD DVD group will exploit that. Call it FUD, but it will hurt BR.

Ditto..the false analysis by the posters above is likened to watching a stock on Wall street in 1 second increments through the course of a year...? Microanalysis of a huge, long term event.....sometimes I wonder what some folks here are thinking.... No idea of the big picture.

Heh, at 3:25 yesterday, the HD DVD player drawer stuttered for a second and then continued to operate.......Advantage Blu Ray!!

Absolutely 100% right on the money. My friend just spent $2200 on an HDTV specifically for football. In fact, it had to feature PiP capabilities because he wants to have two games on at once (he was actually considering two TVs for the living room - I kid you not).

Makes six figures, just spent 2K on a TV but actually scoffed at the $400 prices on BD players. That was without me throwing any HD DVD bias at him and before the Paramount news; price definitely matters. He's shopping around for an HD DVD player now.

It's so early in the game that by the time the consumer starts paying attention Blu-Ray will have the same novelty features. Then we'll have to endure ridiculous arguments about things like yields. Go with what ya got, I guess.

Yep..pricing always wins...iPod is the most expesive MP3 player by a lot and its sales are better than all other cheap chinese MP3 players combined. The public doesn't like garbage and will buy quality.
