Having just watched a couple single player vids and read IGN's preview for Battlefield, I have to say I'm walking away skeptical, somewhat disappointed, yet hopeful all in the same breath.

Battlefield 2 was one of my favorite games last year. While I didn't play it as much as I know a lot of people did(& still do), some of the best gameplay elements I've ever come across were in that game, making me kick myself more than once for selling the game back when (I thought) I was done with the game.

In the single player for BF2 the way you could move all over the battlefield through your line of site was and still is one of the more immersive presentations I've ever come across. The achievements and scoring system allowed us to replay a level over and over and still keep it fresh and fun. On top of all that the game looked great and was very authentic. I don't think I even need to elaborate on how freaking awesome the multilayer was/is. For my money the multiplayer was 2nd only to halo 2.

Battlefield 3 however, is looking like an entirely different game (maybe for the better, or maybe not). I remember being excited with the early footage and concepts that were showed off about 6 months ago. They touted totally destructible environments and squad based play with a realistic modern arsenal. It looks like they've lived up to that promise, but eh, did I miss the memo that it was only a 3 person squad through the entire single player campaign? I'm kinda bummed about not having control of an entire invasion or defending force. I'm already confused about the story. If these 3 guys are "off the reservation" and taking the fight upon themselves, how do they have access to artillery and air support? Hopefully these things will get explained.

There's been no mention of the multiplayer aspects of this game that I can find, and I've got to say that's a bit unsettling at this stage of development. I hope that the developers realized how excellent the maps and game play was for Battlefeild 2 and really expand on what they had going on there.

I walk away not being really enthused with this game. To me, it's looking like COD4 is going to be the way to go for my modern combat (though no vehicles?! bleh)
