Recommend article:Los Angeles (CA) – Acer has become the first major global PC manufacturer to become a member of both the North American HD DVD Promotional Group as well as the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA).

The announcement that Acer today joined the North American HD DVD Promotional Group comes as a somewhat unexpected move, given the fact that the company announced its participation in the BDA just one week ago. Representatives for the North American HD DVD Promotional Group told TG Daily that Acer is currently the only PC manufacturer that is supporting both HD DVD and Blu-ray.

Questions on how Acer will be promoting both HD DVD and Blu-ray in an increasingly hostile competitive environment were left unanswered today. Prepared statements from Acer executives create an interesting situation for Acer, which now looks like it will be playing both sides.

Campbell Kan, vice president of the company's mobile computing business unit was quoted saying "Acer is pleased to join the North American HD DVD Promotional Group to help bring the freshest technology to more consumers worldwide." Last week, Kans statement read: “Acer is pleased to be joining the Blu-ray Disc Association and to continue empowering our users to benefit from the freshest technologies available.”

While it is clear now that Acer will be supporting both formats, the role of the company as participant in both camps is unclear. Representatives at the BDA and the HD DVD group we contacted told us that they were not sure how Acer would be handle the expectation to be promoting both formats at the same time – especially in an "either-or" environment.

However, the North American HD DVD Promotional Group is certain that Acer's support for HD DVD is firm: "The main difference I see is that Acer has been offering HD DVD-enabled notebooks for the last year," said Ken Graffeo, co-president of the North American HD DVD Promotional Group, in an e-mail statement to TG Daily. "They have three models available today - the Aspire 5920, 7720, and 9920. So they are actively engaged in the HD DVD format. In fact, Acer is showcasing the Aspire 5920 model at the HD DVD Mobile Experience truck at CEDIA this week," he wrote.

Ruh-Roh. Acer likes HD DVD just as much as they like Blu-ray. Oh noes........

This does not seem like a strange thing to me. Look any large PC manufacturer will probably offer both preinstalled HD DVD drives with software, and BD HD combo drives as HP is doing now.

I like Acer's move as there is not much sense in offering a BD only playback solution as BD ROM drives are not much different in price from combo readers. This is all good for HD media and especially HD DVD as a format.

PC are going to be huge driver of HD media. With 12 months the most basic of pcs will have everything it needs graphically to be an excellent HD player. In OEM quantities the software will very low priced. We already see BD/HD DVD combo options on HP Media Center PCs at $600. In two years it will be a check box on all but the ultracheapest home pcs.

BD and HD writers are really only curiousities until the write speeds go way up. Even then what are you going to do with them? They won't be much good for backup in as we move into terrabyte size drives on PCs....

I don't see how this is news at since Acer has been listed on the HD DVD promotional groups list as a general member since at least April 2006. http://www.hddvdprg.com/eng/about/member.html

Since when does it have to be news to be posted on here? It seems that most posts are just one up manship from one side or the other. It would be nice if only news and discussions could be posted, instead of rampart speculation and posts to rile the masses...

Actually, when I looked last week they were listed as an Associate Member, which they are still listed as if you click on that link.

I believe this puts them at General Member.

My whole point was last week the BD fanboys were all a glow because Acer joined the BDA. And all the talk was how Acer was dropping HD DVD for Blu-ray. Doesn't appear that way now.

Never listen to these Blu-ray dolts or HD DVD dolts for that matter. Acer's been shipping HD DVD in laptops for a year. There's no reason for them to go exclusive.

OK . . sounds great to me!

Should we expect some kind of an opposite spin from the BDA? Or will this one go the distance?

That's nice and 100% of them are Toshiba laptops. Just like with standalone players, you currently have the choice of Toshiba, Toshiba or Toshiba.

HP and Acer both have laptops with HD DVD drives and have had for several months. Next month you will able to buy a HD DVD player from Integra, Shinco, Ventura, Alpine, Onkyo and Samsung. The Samsung will be a dual format player. Today you may buy a player from Toshiba, Microsoft, RCA, HP (ext HD DVD PC drive), and LG (dual format). You must have lost contact with current events. :)

Yeah, and the BDA gives their users the choice of a PS3 game console that MAY be upgradeable to the newer spec, or you can get an expensive standalone that will definitely not support the promised new specs that will bring it closer to HD DVD in interactivity. I think I'll pick Toshiba, or Toshiba, or maybe even Toshiba, since all three offer completed specs. :)
