I am using a Toshiba A2 Player, Yamaha receiver running optical cable. I set my A2 audio to bitstream in the audio menu. For some reason i don't seem to get the same bass as i do with my regular dvd player and movies. I am using an 8" JBL Sub powered. regular dvds sound great. I really noticed it on King Kong which has many scenes with heavy bass and the sub should get a good workout but it's not. Any ideas?
The experts can probably help you better if they know what the model # is of your receiver.
Also, you may want to state what you've tried already. I would have first: checked the subwoofer's volume, the receiver's setting, and ran a sound level calibration.
Other than that, I dunno, but I'm sure the pros on here will figure it out.
Maybe you check the settings for that input on your reciever.

It's been many years since I owned a Yamaha receiver, so this may not be relevant.
Is there a setting for DTS? I recall when I had to calibrate my Yamaha (995) for DTS, I had to increase the sub level +10 in the DTS setting.
