View Full Version : Pictorial - How HD DVD's Are Made
Lee Stewart 09-07-07, 10:36 PM Here is a link with a bunch of photo's that show the different equipment that is used to make and test HD DVD's.

And if you hunt around on this site you will find the specs for the 45 GB TL HD DVD. (Now 51) This is the company that Toshiba is working with to get either the TL Twin and/or the TL HD produced.
Wow... suddenly, twenty-five bucks for a disc doesn't seem like that much. ;)
I saw their logo on the prototype triple layer disc that is shown in another thread. I hope they get it to work.

siddavis 09-08-07, 01:04 AM Anyone else notice all the Sony equipment? I thought that was a bit humorous!
Anyone else notice all the Sony equipment? I thought that was a bit humorous!I actually found it kind of sad in a way. Sony used to be a great electronics company... they could be yet again. But they have got to let go of this "our-way-or-the-highway" attitude and play with the rest of the industry. The very first thing they should do* is sell off all of their media holdings (they may well have to anyway to pay for the PS3/Blu-ray debacle)... then get back to their roots. Innovate? Yes! But don't force proprietary formats down our throats. Be a leader? Yes! But not a dictator.
* after conceding HD DVD as the next-generation high definition format winner, of course. :D
[edit] Sorry... OT.

Yes it still does to me. :p $19.99 retail would be a nice start.
cybereality 09-08-07, 01:59 AM Nice link man. Some very interesting pictures there. Wish I had some equipment like that.
BioSehnsucht 09-08-07, 02:12 AM I'm thinking this is MT's test / experimental lab line, it doesn't look to be very large scale.. which makes it all the more fascinating!
You know I always assumed DVDs were flat when pressed, not sideways..
Kram Sacul 09-08-07, 02:12 AM Pretty interesting indeed but where's the step where they put in the chewy nougat layer? ;)
The encode room looks kind of pathetic though. What is it used for?
Lee Stewart 09-08-07, 08:22 AM No surprise to see Sony equipment especially their monitors in any pro video area. They are still considered the very best of the best. Their 20" 16x9 HDTV monitor cost $14,000!
Single sided HD-DVD/DVD dual format disc, very nice!

Called a Twin Format. Already in use - Freedom1 and soon Freedom 2 (Jap. Anime) - 15GB HD/4.5GB SD.

I am not sure what exactly the monitors are used for in that process, but you think it might be a suggestion to also use a large screen, as to see more imperfections that won't be as visible on a small screen. It might could make the encodes even better!
That is still a very impressive process.
Curious as to what software is used for all that!

My Bad!:o None of those monitors are the Sony Broadcast Pro Video monitors.
The Encode Room may be used for HDi?

I chuckled when I saw that as well.

The CELL Processor in the PS3 is a joint effort between IBM, Toshiba and Sony.
The EMOTION Chip that is in the 20 GB and 60 GB PS3's is made by Toshiba.
"Strange Bedfellows"
Neat. I wish there were more threads like these here.
Agreed. Thanks for the link OP.
