Hi,

I have two video cards for my PC, both with DVI outputs. One card outputs for dual monitors and the other for single monitors. Can I convert the output of either of these to HDMI? If so, can this be done with a passive adapter or is some active conversion necessary?

If possible, I'd like to mux in the audio from the PC, too, but this is not strictly necessary.

Thank you in advance for any help,
grimholtz

You should be able to use a DVI to HDMI cable. I use this cable with my Asus laptop which has a DVI output.

DVI only carries video, so you'll have to output your audio a different way. If you have a soundcard, you may be able to use a digital output.

Awesome, thanks. So there's no way to mux the audio into the cable?

DVI is a video connection, so it doesn't carry audio. That's like trying to carry audio over component. :)

I understand, but doesn't HDMI support audio? If so, I'm asking about muxing (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multiplexing) the audio out and DVI out on my PC into a single HDMI cable.

I don't know how it would be possible since the DVI output doesn't carry audio at all. It's not part of the standard. There isn't a way to combine a DVI signal and audio signal from another output into a HDMI input that I know of, short of using a receiver.

Just for video a dvi-to-hdmi cable should work (it works for me anyway). As for adding audio in, take a look at this: http://www.ramelectronics.net/html/1311.htm. You will need digital coax out on your computer, and I haven't tried it myself yet so I can't say it'll work, but it does look promising.

That looks perfect. Exactly what I'm looking for. However, why do you say I need digital coax output? Look at the closeup: http://www.ramelectronics.net/assets/images/audio-authority/1311.jpg
It looks like a standard RCA jack.

Good observation, the reason for the rca jack is because digital coax also uses them.

Thanks. I didn't know that. And it wouldn't make sense for an analog audio signal to be muxed with a digital video signal... it *has* to be a digital analog signal... the RAM electronics device is passive so it can't have A/D converters built-in.
