For all those who do not yet have this Comedy/Action movie as a part of their collection, the local FYE in Houston has it on sale for $26.99 (HD-DVD Combo). While I realize that some of you don't like Combo-disks, please just take this as a polite notification of a great movie on sale.
(I'd rather not turn this thread into an argument over the problems or merits of Combo Disks.)

Yeah I'm new to dealing with FYE and based upon what I have read here online in the Forums regarding their pricing, I was VERY impressed with the number of titles my local FYE has on HD-DVD for sale!

FYE sucks in general. I ran one for a year and it was easily the worst job I've ever had. Their pricing was horrible, their inventory system was crap, they wouldn't allow price matching, etc. Stay away from this hell hole. The faster they are put out of business the better, as its an evil place.

I'm a recent add to the HD DVD club, but to be honest, I'm not all that excited about watching comedies in HD.

Hot Fuzz is one of the best movies of the year, easily. And for lack of a better term, its an Action-Comedy.

I would also recommend Shaun of the Dead in HD, its an action-zombie-comedy! :D

another thing that sucks about FYE is they're not universal about their sales. So that Hot Fuzz HD DVD is likely not on sale at all other locations.

FYE is (usually) a mall store and with most mall stores, MSRP is the norm. I have probobaly ever bought like 2 or 3 things from them.

although on the other hand...when some movies first come out, FYE will have them on sale, and the prices usually lands between Amazon and Best Buy, so it's worth it after you factor in basic Amazon shipping.

I remember getting Coming to America for $22.99 when it first came out.

Also, FYE has a better selection of catalog titles than Best Buy. I'm personally too impatient to go the Amazon route on anything that's not part of a sale (I don't have Prime), so FYE is a decent option.

But yeah, anyone who pays $35 - $40 plus tax at FYE is just a sucker.

Yeah, I was shocked at the HD-DVD titles they had at this FYE. It has easily got the largest selection percentage of the HD-DVD Catalog than any other place here in Houston that I have found.

While their standard prices may suck, I am very pleased with their sale prices.

I've purchased the bulk majority of my HD DVDs at the two local FYE Superstores. I've said on here before in several posts, if you shop them smart it is definately one of the better deals going for HD DVDs. I don't know exactly how many superstores they have, they were old Media Plays they acquired when they bought them out of bankruptcy from Sam Goody. Just a few things I recommend:

1. Sign up for the backstage pass. If you purchase the bulk majority of the movies there you'll easily recoup the cost quickly and then some. Also it is good for 20% off on your birthday. It combines with other promos as well, so meaning on your birthday you can literally have a field day (I went around and bought up the used and new release titles, came out to like $4.50-9 per used movie (they were running buy two get one half off during my b-day so I hit both superstores and cleaned up). You could do better or worse but hardly anyone is buying them around here, so I could just hold off on the used titles until they run a good promo.

2. Buy new releases. They're almost always on sale (several have been as low as $15.99 locally when they were released, including 40 Year old Virgin, Meaning of Life, and Coming to America many others have been $19.99 to $22.99). With the backstage pass the $19.99 release is then only $18, the $22.99 one is $20.70, the $15.99 one is $14.40.

3. Buy used when they run a promo. They run about 4 different promos in rotation, 40% off a single title, buy one get one, buy 2 get one 50% off, buy 3 get one free. All of them work out pretty good, obviously buy one get one is the best, must have bought 16 movies or more during that promo at a cost of less then $7 each. They usually price them between $9.99 and $25.99 depending on the titles (the big box sets are usually $50). When combined with other offers this gets them down in the $7 range or less. I probably bought 2/3s of the titles I own this way, that said FYE or otherwise I only paid retail for one title out of the 93 or so I own. I've honestly never had a single problem with them being used either, all looked like new, not even dust on them and played fine, unlike some of the DVDs that I see out there which are scratched to heck.

I don't know what kind of selection they've got around the country but both the local superstores regularly stock approx. 215-220 titles each by far the best selection of any B&M in the area, they almost always get all the new release titles in, regardless of how obscure and have them out they day they are released (somtimes sooner, only problem is if they leak the titles early, while you can buy them the sale prices won't kick in until the actual release date). As far as compared to the mall stores, the two mall stores around here charge full retail, the superstores sell for about $3 less, so with the backstage pass they're going to be at Best Buy prices without a sale.

If I'm the buyer at FYE though I wouldn't be giving this place full retail price. Trans World Entertainment, the parent of FYE, which was the resulting company when they bought up Sam Goody and other such operations out of bankruptcy, is probably one of, if not the largest, B&M sellers of this type of stuff, and they've got probably close to 1000 stores (in addition to whatever their multiple internet sites might generate). They probably have enough buying power to get these things as cheap or cheaper than most anyone else, so if you're paying full retail at one of their mall stores you're probably doing nothing but padding their pockets. Based on what they buy the used stuff back for, they're marking it up 50% or so, they give you $5 back for a title but are selling it for $10.

Other than that I love this place for HD DVDs, I'm patient if I don't have it and get it used under promo, if its new and I want it I get it during the sale. The selection shames Best Buy (or just about any B&M that I've seen) and often I end up paying far less than most other retailers even Amazon, thats not even counting the used titles, those I'm paying DVD prices for after promos. Just shop smart if you go there.

YRLY , I am noticing most of these same things regarding my local FYE. Their promo's for new releases are extremely good. Add this with one of the promo's I've seen them have so far, and it adds up to some really great prices if you just plan carefully. So far, I really don't see FYE as being all that bad. (Atleast not the one here in Houston near me.)
