View Full Version : Warhawk: when it goes beyond trash talking....
rjsanc30 09-08-07, 05:58 PM So I'm online on an SCEA server when two complete idiots start up one of the most annoying, long-lasting and abusive trash talking sessions I've been around."F this", "go _ _ your sister, "your mama likes_ _"...so on and so forth. Believe me I'm no angel myself, I've talked smack with everyone else and I know that trash talking is part of the whole experience but this two jagoffs went way to far.
Are the SCEA servers monitored - I noticed that after I got into it a little bit with one of these verbally challenged morons that in the very next map they were both gone - can you get kicked for being to abrasive? Has anyone else had this issue? Don't get me wrong, I don't want to come off as some complainer but the whole experience last night just sucked, between their monopolizing of the speech and their vulgar content...it just sucked.
Enjoy the silence...
This is why I often turn off voices given that a game has the option to do so... Don't now about Warhawk, didn't check. Another solution is to play with freinds...
rjsanc30 09-08-07, 06:12 PM Yeah, looks like I'm going to have to join a clan so I don't have to deal with these chumps, shame. I was just wondering if others out there have experienced the same situation.
modiGTI 09-08-07, 06:25 PM It happens all the time...I wish Online network allowed you to do a Private chat with a buddy, I don't understand why such a simple feature isn't available. Hopefully, the HOME update will include that feature.
jhaines 09-08-07, 06:26 PM You can apparently mute specific players via the audio options, though I've never tried it myself...

I've played quite a few different online games in the past and have heard just about every curse word you could imagine. But I never heard of people monitoring and taking action against any profanity or threats made by an online gamer. This might be that I've only retaliated against a persons snide comments. I would imagine it depends upon the severity and someone reporting these comments.
rjsanc30 09-08-07, 06:43 PM I generally can hold my own in the trash talking arena as well, but man does it get old fast.
I've probable played somewhere between 60-70 games of Warhawk thus far - some we're full of crap talking and others were actually people playing the game, helping each other out - wish there was a way to find more of those people, oh right clans...wish I had more friends with PS3's.:)
_Avarice_ 09-08-07, 06:58 PM Yeah, I've experienced this quite a bit. On Friday evening, members of the P$ clan were annoying on a whole other level. Rude, obnoxious, and just plain dumb. Once I went into the audio menu and muted each and every one of them, it was a pleasant game.
Simple as that.

...so there is an option to mute people, nice, nice! I'll definitely be using that later tonight. I assume that option is available from the pause menu?
Great tip!

Correct! It's the first option under the Audio tab. There is a list of everybody in the game and an icon showing whether they have a mic. When they're talking, you'll see the "decibel meter" light up, so you know who's spamming the airwaves.
Yeah I hate when you join a room and are playing catch up on score, killing pretty much everything that moves, and the kiddies cry that you need to get your ass on the ground cause they have called the air.
I'm a pilot and SCEA servers are open skies as far as I'm concerned.
Then of course they'll give you a team kill or two to show they are serious. I usually don't attack back since 90% of the time they won't risk many team kills due to server booting.
Krieger119 09-09-07, 06:35 AM I got into it with someone yesterday. We were in a CTF match and this dude kept blowing up the mine I would put on the flag and he said that he didn't want them there so that he could "burn up the guys when they come" I assume with his flamethrower. So we started arguing ... we lost 2 rounds in a row b/c of his "awesome burning skills". Luckily, he left after that. But he got me so pissed off ... I even TKed him a few times and I HATE TKing people.
bschellva 09-09-07, 08:59 PM I must be in the wrong games (or the right ones, depending on your perspective). I never hear much of anyone talking. Makes me wonder sometimes why I got the headset.
Playing with idiots on your own team is rough.... especially because of friendly fire in the game.. (which I agree should be there)
But.... just mute them..... its easy. Just go to audio options IN GAME and you can do it from there, you can mute or unmute anyone or everyone you want.
I must be in the wrong games (or the right ones, depending on your perspective). I never hear much of anyone talking. Makes me wonder sometimes why I got the headset.
No kidding. For a game that comes with a headset at retail, a surprising number of people are quiet.

Between crap and silence, what's your choice?
If you want quality games with voice communication, play with people you relate to on a daily basis.
Online gaming has caused me to lose a lot face in humanity. And I very much hate to say it, but our young Americans are the worst.

My sis is a WoW addict (like I was) ... she hates dealing with anyone face to face. She really has a problem being out in public. Oh, but she can run and jump and scream to the top of her lungs when shes on her toon in Orgrimmar or Ironforge lol ... I know a professor for NYU and we were actually discussing this not too long ago (online gaming & MMOs) and he agrees that this is something that can ruin people. Moderation is key imo.

lol makes you wonder how we ended up with all the gangster wanna b's ! :p
had to silence a bunch of french players over weekend - they wouldnt shut up! the few english speaking players where like shut the F up - no one understands you - there where two or three! lol silence feature works and prety quick at gettting clear air.
TRALFAZ 09-10-07, 11:09 AM I host games all the time and no one ever seems to want to talk until I start issuing suggestions on which areas we should take next (I always play Zones) and then everyone starts to chime in and the next thing you know... team work. :) No real idiots yet.

Arggh. The "P$" clan annoys me to no end (played against them in rfom)...too bad they've spread to Warhawk as well...

New to online gaming, are we? ;)
Like others have said, finding a consistent group of people who tend to game the same time you do is the key. Otherwise, it can be hit or miss.
I've had pretty good luck in Warhawk so far, but I'm glad I have plenty of RL friends for when Halo drops in 2 weeks. Halo is EASILY the worst game for pick-up groups, that game attracts immature kids like no other.
My XBL and PSN tags are both "RichP", feel free to send a FR request and I'll jump in for some Warhawk action. It will be my main online game until the 25th. :) I'm usually on from about 7:15-10 pm on weeknights (EDT).

I guess I maybe still considered a newbie to online gaming, been logging on for a little over a year now.
My whole point of this thread was simply to ascertain the experiences of others as well as to share my thoughts on the low-brow - with thug life tat'ed across their chests, wanna be gansta's that seem to be saturating many SCEA servers, or at least the ones I end up on...:( It's not surprising to me in the least, actually I've come to expect a certain level of idiots online but, sometimes I feel that these people are drawn to me somehow, seems as if I always get into games with these types. I need to find a good clan to join, one with people who are interested in playing the game not just team killing you because you got into "their tank".

It's probably 75% of the random online population. It's how you realize the console market truly is a mass market.

I'm friends with a bunch of P$ (Profe$$ional $kill$) guys, played with them on RFoM, and I think they're a really great clan. They were always very respectful and helpful with me. Pretty much they really have to be trash-talked or kicked at first before they'll get rude back. Problem is, they're exceptionally good at these games, and that just naturally attracts a lot of hostility and testosterone toward them.

coneyparleg 09-10-07, 01:50 PM as annoying as this can get, I do remember playing Socom 1 and my intense trash talking made a kid cry (kids shouldn't play socom anyways)
it went something like this "you suck..*sob* *sob*" when I kept laughing he left the other gamers made me feal bad with comments like "wow that was really harsh", and "he's just a kid man"
while to me that was funny, the trash talk can at times overshadow gameplay and lessen the experience

When I say exceptionally good, I'm not kidding! They go from game to game dominating in tournaments all over the United States. They just won the MLG Rainbow Six tournament in Chicago for the XBox 360. Played against them in RFoM as a team a whole bunch of times, with my clan, and they're insane together. Half the time you die, and you don't even know how it happened! Haha. (I wish I were kidding.)
Here's a link to their website. I think their statement about a winning attitude on the front page is especially interesting: http://www.proskills.us/

Then these certainly weren't their best ambassadors. Nobody would (or could) talk in the game because of the constant, ridiculously loud & off-topic banter. For some reason, they saw fit to fill any brief time that nobody was talking either with singing or humming.
Completely obnoxious and immature. From the pitch of the voices, they figured to be no more than 16. Once they were all muted, it was an enjoyable game!

Anybody THAT obsessed with video games needs to re-evaluate their life decisions, lol.
Mattardo 09-10-07, 03:08 PM Online gaming has great advantages - you can listen to all sorts of insults being hurled at you or someone else - you can listen to badly-spoken english spoken by rap-influenced players - you can get murdered in cold blood by your fellow teammates - your opponents can quit mid-game - your allies can quit mid-game - your connection can **** out along with your opponents giveing them the jumpy magic effect. Ah yes, online gaming! It's awful.. but sometimes you get lucky, and it's fun. Games should really punish team-killing and quitting and griefing more than they do - lockout of all network games for an hour, to be increased by more if they don't learn. Halo 2 was fun until the griefers and quitters showed up - I don't care if you're babie's screaming or your pizza showed up - if these things are an issue, then don't play online games while waiting for pizza or babysitting. That's the most common excuse I hear for why people aren't punished more often. "Oh I had an emergency" good for you - so being banned for an hour won't be so much trouble if it was a legit emergency that's going to keep you away for an hour anyways... Online gaming. It's a riot.
_Avarice_ 09-10-07, 03:13 PM Oh please. A crying baby or even pizza being delivered IS more important playing a video game. It's called real life and a lot of gamers have one. Some don't, as evidenced by those with hundreds of logged hours in a single game.

Usually the only people I hear are ones I'd rather have not heard. For example, this weekend I had a long 'communication session' with a teammate that I would prefer to have not had. It started while he was grenading me out of a turret that I was using to clear out two turrets at an opposing base prior to moving in with my Warhawk (beside the turret). This was during a 'zones' match in which I had already taken and mined two bases and ended up coming in second out of 32 players in. His communication went something like the following:
Him: "Get out of that turret" grenade thrown, 'boom'
Me: "What's your problem - I'm on your team!"
Him: "We are playing ZONES, you ****ing idiot, take a base and quit screwing around!" grenade thrown, 'boom' (Damage to Warhawk and turret this time)
Me: "I know we are playing 'zones' a**hole, quit trying to kill your own teammates and do something productive!"
Him: "Amateurs don't know how to play - you freaking coward!" grenade thrown, 'boom'
I jump out and knife him (TK frustration) and tell him to check the score after the game. Then move on to the base and secure another zone for my team. Funny how I had to scroll down to find his name on the board. We won in spite not using his expertise and strong command of the game...
instantpop 09-10-07, 03:58 PM People are dumb. I feel your pain, Makomachine. I love that he called you an amateur, that's the best part. In my experience, others are the amateurs because I really don't think most people understand the concept of how the ZONES game works. I've come in first in every one I have played because everybody else treats it like a regular deathmatch, not understanding the growing of your zone and linking them together. Doesn't matter how much you tell them how it works, either. They'll still talk gangsta and try to knife you. Morons.

agreed...
if someone DOESN'T quit for their baby or the pizza guy, they have some serious sociopathic issues. but if one doesn't quit for their baby, they should be kicked in the head.
i do like the fact that you don't respawn right away so you don't have to endure a bunch of kills while paying for the pizza.
but quitting because your team is losing isn't a good enough reason... especially with the option to switch teams, i mean come on, if you can't beat 'em join 'em!!!
rjsanc30 09-10-07, 04:51 PM They'll still talk gangsta and try to knife you. Morons.
No doubt, did you ever see the movie "Waiting", the two bus boys, Nick and T-Dog, that's what these fools sound like online...
"Yo bitch, what makes you think I won't cut you" - Nick - Funny movie, a perfect likness:) Oh well guess that's what you get from online game play...thank god for the mute function...ah, makes the game enjoyable again.

Yes, I agree - that's my point : if you have crying babies or pizzas being delivered you shouldn't be spending time on a game. This is just an example of what quitters use to justify their behavior. People quit because : they are losing and don't want to impact their rank any worse than it is, they are losing and the rank doesn't matter, they don't like the map, etc... , whatever. Whenever it is suggested that quitters (who negatively impact their team by quitting) should be punished, then we hear an outcry of "my baby was crying" or "I had a real-life emergency" - which is a legitimate reason for quitting a game. I agree. But these people should also not be worried about the penalty (if developers ever start issuing one) because 1) they shouldn't be playing games when they have responsibilities and 2)an emergency will keep them away from the console for a while anyways. I don't think rank, standing or status should be punished for quitting - just a network lockout for a little bit. Of course, most people are selfish pricks who think the anonoymous air the internet gives them excuses any behavior. I'm not advocating being serious all the time or that games should take precedent over real life - not at all. Just get the responsibilities right, so those of us who have made the time to play an online game for an hour or so can enjoy that time because we HAVE set our things right. So please don't misunderstand me - if you're an irresponsible parent playing Warhawk or some other game and your child begins to drink poison - then by all means stop them from doing so, quit the game, and buy a book on proper parenting. Though, letting them drink it might do wonders for humanity by straining out your genetics from the overall pool. And remember - it's not just you playing online.
_Avarice_ 09-10-07, 06:27 PM ^^ LOL. If I quit a game, it's because real life is calling and there are thousands of things that are more important. There will be no "penalty" because IT'S A GAME!
1) they shouldn't be playing games when they have responsibilitiesEverybody has responsibilities. For me, gaming is usually a brief respite from them. But people have to realize that these games are completely meaningless, except to be fun! People who take their video games too seriously frighten me.

I think WOW was handing out a penalty for a while there, might still be doing it. It's not a matter of taking the game seriously or not - if you personally have no problem quitting on your team and screwing them over then that's fine - the rest of the team shouldn't be penalized for your actions and views. AND since there are thousands of things more important, then a network time-out or rank-down penalty shouldn't bother you, should it? So there's really no objection to such a thing, essentially, UNLESS you take your rank and network connection seriously enough to complain... So such a thing would make everybody happy in the end. :D

WOW is a different animal, as those people live video games and are just an unusual bunch (my apologies to any participants, but...c'mon :p)
If I have to take a phone call, I'm going to stop playing. Then, when I'm done, I'm going to jump right back in. Five minutes later, I may have to leave again. If this offends the few ridiculous die-hards in Gaming Land, than so be it. Gaming conforms to life, not the other way around.

I know quite a few people who play WOW casually and don't spend their whole day doing it - they still don't quit on their teams. ANd in case you haven't noticed, AVS forum is for die-hard fans of video, audio, and in the case of this videogame forum - video games. So .. you're probably in the minority in thinking that way here. I could be wrong - I usually am. Everytime I hear WOW now all I can think about is the South Park episode where they make fun of it. Too funny.

Any resemblance to being a die-hard fan for me is far surpassed by my wife's ability to make me die harder when I haven't listened to her third warning to shut off the game when there's something she wants to watch on TV. Or when she feels it's time to call bedtime. Trust me, if I'm in the middle of playing a team death match and I get the hook, I listen to the hook. Or get gouged by it! If that makes me an idiot, at least I'm still married. :p
And as for the 14 year old boy who feels like I've just abandoned him, because now he has one less wing-mate? Life is really going to come as some kind of shock to him when he moves out of mommy and daddy's house.

If my wife ever told me when to go to bed, she wouldn't be my wife. Now, unless you meant the OTHER kind of bed time, then I'm right there with ya ;)
And my wife gets to watch whatever she wants to watch on the TV in the bedroom, since that's where I keep her chained up. Hey, at least I leave the remote within reach.

And as for the 14 year old boy who feels like I've just abandoned him, because now he has one less wing-mate? Life is really going to come as some kind of shock to him when he moves out of mommy and daddy's house.
LOL x 2 :D
{Looking for Warhawk Server}?{American}{Playstation}3{Owner}?{Thanks for the offer, but I'll have to pass} ^_^
vladi123456 09-11-07, 02:49 PM I just got the game, and I have a couple of questions.....
What is SCEA server??
And also, when I want to join a game - it shows some servers in blue color, and some in white - why is the color difference?
Thanks in advance!

SCEA servers are official Sony servers. They are (almost) always colored in blue and are ranked. Servers in white are user hosted and can either be ranked (normal trophy cup picture) or unranked (trophy cup pic with an "X" through it).
The SCEA servers will all have the same respawn times and Friendly Fire set to 100%....so DON'T TEAM KILL :D

Oh, that makes sense now!! I really appreciate the explanation - I couldn't understand why all the different colors and "X"s and why I would get killed sometimes by my own team members - I didnt realize that some games allowed friendly fire.
Do you also happen to know why some games are aircraft only, and some are not? Is that something that people customize themselves?

You got it! I assume your referring to the dogfighting games....and no this time it has nothing to do with M. Vick. The SCEA servers are generally specified as to what type of game it's hosting:LG - Large Map, MD - Medium Map, VAR - Varoius, TDM - Team Death Match, DM - Death Match...you seeing the theme here:)
Hope this helps.

Oh!! That really helps! I think Warhawk is the best game I've played so far, and this helps to understand better what I'm gonna get myself into - thanks everybody for your help!! :D
_Avarice_ 09-11-07, 05:40 PM You had me at "draw a bath, gets a glass of wine"
LOL.
instantpop 09-11-07, 06:25 PM The mock sincerity is always the best answer. Works for me every time as well. When person doing the smack talking has a vocabulary of about 20 words, all of which are curse words or some kind of slur, they tire out rather quickly when they can't yell at you anymore. Almost as entertaining as the games themselves.
Mattardo 09-11-07, 07:39 PM If my wife ever told me when to go to bed, she wouldn't be my wife. Now, unless you meant the OTHER kind of bed time, then I'm right there with ya ;)
And my wife gets to watch whatever she wants to watch on the TV in the bedroom, since that's where I keep her chained up. Hey, at least I leave the remote within reach.
Yes, my girlfriend doesn't care how much time I spend playing games - she loves to watch me play for some weird reason. She gets her tv time while I'm at work, I get it while off. If there's something she wants to watch, that's what our DVR is for - to watch it later. It works out nicely.
Mongoos150 09-11-07, 07:53 PM I don't play warhawk much, but haven't experienced this. Can't say I'm surprised though, just like the Halo crowd, there are lots of under-socialized, immature gamers who get their kicks talking dirty to others online.

Don't forget the players in Halo who get their jollies from sexually assualting your corpse once your dead using the crouch button... :D
