View Full Version : TL51 is official: What do you think will be the 1st commercial TL51 movie HD DVD?
BuGsArEtAsTy 09-08-07, 10:16 PM Let's assume that TL51 does make it to commercial movie releases, which in turn means we will assume that all players can play TL51...
If so, what do you think will be that first TL51 movie/movie set?
My guess is the Extended Version of the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

MichaelHDDVD 09-08-07, 10:20 PM If TL51 is completely compatible with all HD DVD players I could see Warner, Universal or Paramount releasing a movie on a TL51 with a $@%# load of extras to show that it can be done. Most likely Paramount since they tend to include HD extras which usually require a second disc (MI:III, World Trade Center)

Sorry, found it on the HD DVD Hardware forum.
Nevermind. :o

According to Kosty, you only need a firmware update on G1 and G2.

Source? Preferably from Toshiba. Seems a firmware upgrade could fix it if the current hardware is compatible.
Titanic would be an ideal title in my household as it'd make my wife very happy and a little more accepting of all the money I'm spending on high def stuff.

If that were true, that would majorly suck. That'd be even worse than the BD 1.0 fiasco... assuming that HD DVD studios actually published on TL51. (It's interesting to note that Amir states that the AVS geeks are much more excited about TL51 than the actual bigwigs.)
However, several different posters *claim* that info from CEDIA says TL51 should be compatible with existing players (after a firmware update). Unfortunately, while TL51 is indeed official, TL51 working on existing players is not (yet).

And you know this to be true because? Link please.
PRO-630HD 09-08-07, 10:41 PM Hey guys do you think they are going to release a product that is incompatible with every hddvd player out there and cause consumer outrage? Do all the new interactive features and web access work on only G2 players? Think about it.
Should have been Transformers.

I seriously doubt the forum would have approved the disc if this were true.
BuGsArEtAsTy 09-08-07, 11:06 PM Should have been Transformers.
Why? Transformers is only 144 minutes long.
Hey guys do you think they are going to release a product that is incompatible with every...player out there and cause consumer outrage? No, only complete, utter, raving morons would do something that stupid! :D
ChrisPC 09-08-07, 11:08 PM No one's mentioned Gone With the Wind?

Those cover mock-ups are sexy and have me droolin'!
ricwhite 09-08-07, 11:11 PM I truly believe it will be Lord of the Rings. And I believe we'll get an announcement before the end of the year for a release in the first half of 2008. Just a gut feeling.

Yeah, I was thinking of that one, but I wasn't sure who was the studio since it was not on IMDB. However, I now see from Amazon that it's Warner, so that's definitely an option.
However, it's less than 4 hours long, and would only really need a mono DD+ track IMO. I'm thinking it would probably be fine on DL30, unless they added a bazillion extras on the same disc.

That, or that combined Kill Bill movie. The first TL51 movie should be one with a fairly long runtime.

"Dude, what's going on!?"
- *BOOM*(pieces of person loosing their mind because a link and/or source could not be found)

Isn't refocusing of the laser to the deeper third layer all that's required? This would seem as trivial a problem as overburning CDs... the laser head assembly has to have been designed with tolerance to spare to account for somewhat sloppy disc quality, as well as mechanical drift of the mechanism over the life of the player. In fact, if TL51 was in concept from the beginning, it would only make sense that the necessary range of adjustability of the laser would have been spec'd, if only as a just-in-case (would someone who's familiar with the HD DVD spec please confirm or refute this?).
I truly believe it will be Lord of the Rings. And I believe we'll get an announcement before the end of the year for a release in the first half of 2008. Just a gut feeling. That would be so sweet. I hate double-dipping with a passion... but I wouldn't blink an eye on these (just box-set them from the beginning, though, to save everyone the trouble ;)).
George Montemayor 09-08-07, 11:37 PM Should have been Transformers.
I'm pretty sure the disc will transform from a DL to a TL HD DVD with the help of the allspark.
Dave Mack 09-08-07, 11:41 PM Titanic would be good...
CalgaryCowboy 09-08-07, 11:41 PM I wonder if TL51 will used as a marketing item or just when needed. If it is only used when needed then there might not be that many used. Also what if the cost is more than 2 HD30s. I never minded haveing two discs.
BuGsArEtAsTy 09-08-07, 11:44 PM Regarding Lord Of The Rings and double dipping:
I wonder if they would hold back the extended version while they release the theatrical version, to make everyone double dip.
Lost Season 3... I can dream can't I?
Highly unlikely of course, considering it's Buena Vista. But I'm sure you already knew that.
However, what makes it even more unlikely is that it is a TV show. There is no necessity to put 1-hour episodes on triple-layer discs.

Having a 2nd disc for extras is often OK. I hate having a second disc (or second side) for the second half of the movie though.
