View Full Version : PS3 won't recognize original hard drive used externally
Mikazaru 09-09-07, 09:09 PM I bought a Vantec NexStar3 sata to usb enclosure for my old 60gb ps3 hard drive, but for some reason, my ps3 won't recognize the combination. Has anyone had the same problem? Do I have to reformat the drive or something? Wondering whether I should return the enclosure or not.
I believe the ps3 doesn't see NTFS. My 120 doesn't show up either. But it will see my 2 gig flash drive.

His drive is not NTFS it is FAT32 since he took it out of his PS3! Have you tried it hooked up to a computer? If it works on the computer but not on the PS3 then you know its not the enclosure.

Yes it works on the pc ,but not on the PS3.

So the ps3 will only see fat32 on an external usb drive, but internally uses an ntfs formatted hdd? Strange -- but if my enclosure isn't defective, this would be a logical conclusion. I will check to see if it works on a pc at work tomorrow. Thanks for the replies everyone.

The PS3 most certainly does not use NTFS for its internal hard drive file system (NTFS is a proprietary Microsoft format) - so it either uses fat32 or some custom file system designed for the PS3.
Maybe there's something about the enclosure that the PS3 doesn't like?
Did you reformat your 60gb hard drive when you connected it to your computer? Are you sure it is currently a fat32 drive and not NTFS?
The internal drive in the PS3 uses a proprietary formating, not NTFS or FAT32. To use it externally you must reformat to FAT32.

No matter how many times you say this, people will not believe you.

That makes sense given the nature of the problem. Thanks for the explanation!

Thanks, your explanation seems on the money. The drive works on the pc at work so the enclosure is fine (it was recognized at least). I will reformat to fat32, thanks for the help.

Which is sad because he's right.
bkchurch 09-15-07, 12:33 PM Why don't you just put it back into the PS3, re-format it, and then try using it externally?
GW-SMOkeY 09-15-07, 12:38 PM I am having same issue too.... I cant figure out why my USB 2.0 Encluousure works on PC both in NTFS and FAT32 but not on the PS3 externaly... Its a ATA drive 60GB from my laptop.
scarycall 09-15-07, 05:40 PM What I did, and all you need to do, is download a program like fat32format (http://www.ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/index.htm?fat32format.htm) and when it's done, the ps3/computer will see all 60 gigs under fat32. (The windows format program is intentionally "gimped")
