The reason I'm asking is that there's a prototype Blu-ray disc (I know, it'll be released the same day as Duke Nukem Forever), but it still shows that there are many more layers to go with Blu-ray. Can HD DVD go up that high?

Of course they 'can' have 10 layers or so - so over 170Gb theoretically, however the more pertinent question is 'why would they ever need to?'

A 51Gb disc can comfortably hold the longest of Hollywood movies ever made - so that is all the studios would ever request or require.

What game engine have they switched to these days on Duke Nukem taking forever?

To answer your question it may be possible to make a three layer double sided HD DVD yielding 102MB total.

Exactly my point. This touting of capacity seems to be one of the distinct advantages Blu-Rayers feel they have over HD DVD. Currently I am amazed at the current quality of HD releases, so adding another layer would be even better. If I feel like watching 800 hours of extras/special features I guess I will have to buy the 10 layered double sided (250GB) blu ray versions... or... they could simply have a 2 HD DVD set such as we have successfully seen on DVD releases for years.

Well lets look at it this way.

Why do we need more than 50 gigs ? There are few movies that would require more than that and other things like extras could fit on a second disc.

Perhaps tv shows ? I'm sure that if you had a 100 gig disc you could cut a 5 disc set to 3 discs. not all that big of a deal though.

So that really leaves storage. 100 gig disc is nice , but how long would it actually take to write 100 gigs to disc ? i'm sure even with the disc speed hitting 10k rpm (which i beleive is what the discs start to spin out of control at ) it will take a very long time to write that much data . Esp if after the second layer it takes longer to write. We've seen how long its taken dvd's to come on par with single and dual layer writing speeds , for many years dual layer lagged behind single. Will it be the same with bluray and hd dvd ? Only compounded more with the fact that for a 100 gigs hd dvd would need 6 layers and bluray would need 4 ?

Not only that but in the future we will see holographic discs which are many times faster than hd dvd and bluray and already store 300 gigs up to what they believe will be 1tb of info.

I think that 50 gigs will be enough for the next 5 years or so before hologarphic discs become avalible for storage back ups .
