Do you find that HD-DVDs tend to have more obvious artifacts as a result of the compression of the video?

It isn't an issue with the format obviously as stuff like menus and the like are indistinguishable and there are titles like Batman Begins that look fantastic but it just seems to me that on the whole there is a lot of image noise.

Maybe It's just me?

I'm viewing both on a brand new Sony Bravia 46" LCD via HDMI.

...What movie are you watching?? I can honestly say that I have never once seen a compression artefact on any of my HD DVDs... Even single layer ones such as American Werewolf in London.

is there a particular disc that you see these sort of problems on?

personally i think this a shot at the format, due it its smaller capacity. but lets not forget that our hd movies don't quite fill them as it stands, and they certainly use the same encoding on blu-ray, often times though its superior to the blue counterpart. compression and encoding aside.

I have both and i can not tell a real difference between picture quality of HD-DVD and Blu-Ray.

Both have their high and low quality titles. Overall i tend to like HD-DVDs quality a little more.

Can't speak for BR since I don't have a player yet. (No, I'm not HD-DVD only, I just have a wife.) But on HD-DVD, I see lots of what could be called compression artifacts. Unfortunately, they are all due to my TV, not the player/discs, and I can't afford a new one :(

I have observed compression artifacts / banding in the following titles

1. The Departed (HD DVD) - In couple of scenes
2. X-Men (Blu-ray) - Worst of the pack
3. Face/Off (Blu-ray) - In couple of scenes
4. Happy Feet - Banding in couple of scenes
5. POTC-1,2 - In night scenes

To be completely honest, I have not been happy with the quality of Happy Feet as I expected much more detail as it is completely animated like Ice Age on BD.

But overall, I've yet to see artifacts on HD DVD, while I definitely see artifacts on Blu-Ray.

King Arthur, Invincible, POTC1 and a few others have absolutely horrible grain issues. It's so bad that people who are not at all in hi-def asked me on several Blu-Ray movies, "Is this hi-def too?". Talk about reality.

No. If anything it's the opposite, given the number of BD25, MPEG2 titles on Blu-ray.

I own about 50 HD DVDs have have seen significant compression artefacts (i.e. ones that you don't have to pause and squint at with a magnifying glass to notice) on precisely two titles: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Wolf Creek.

TMNT has banding at the beginning night sky scene. One of the only few HD DVD I have seen that has noticable banding. Only on that one scene.

Don't have BR.

some discs are well mastered while others are not, i own 35 bds and 15 hd dvds and thus far the hd dvds have a more consistent picture with fewer issues.

Looked like SD? Not from where I'm sitting. It wasn't the single most detailed HD DVD I ever saw, but it looked decent and showed more detail than quite a few highly acclaimed discs I could mention.

I also like the film at lot, so there! :p
