Obviously no lossless audio...

While the 24bit 1.5MBit/s DD+ track of Transformers was arguably a valid choice (versus 16bit TrueHD) given the limited bandwidth budget (I rather have those 3 MBit/s improving the AVC transfer of this movie) Warner's 640 kbps DD+/DD really doesn't cut it.

This movie is 170 minutes long according to IMDB - could there be no lossless cause it couldn't fit on the 30GB HD DVD?

Well, without going too much into format war battle points, it has been theorized that Warner doesn't really bother to differentiate the Blu-ray version even if they could.

So if lossless TrueHD or some such on The Aviator ended up at 35GB they just leave it off both HD DVD and Blu-ray

People complaing about the Warner's choice for going with dobly digital instead of DD+ or Dolby TrueHD.

Maybe another market test as the MSRP seems to be the same?

Nope, the new benchmark Blu-Boys are going to have to use is 197 minutes because Troy Directors Cut is 196 minutes with TrueHD

I don't see in that link where it says it's only 640 kbps on the HD DVD. That's a limitation for blu ray. Are you sure it's not going to be 1.5 Mbps DD+ on the HD DVD? 640 would be a no sale for me, since it would be barely better than DVD quality.

Any single DD+ track from Warner has been 640 kbps - from the very first "The Last Samurai" disc to the most recent "We Are Marshall" ;)

Universal and Paramount/Dreamworks use 24 bit DD+ at a very healthy 1.5 MBit/s rate. With Warner it is mere 640kbps DD+/DD or 16bit TrueHD on rare occassion.

Look at benes excellent specs thread for more data.

Are you sure, I could've sworn Warner started using 1.5mbps DD+ on some titles without a TrueHD track.

100% confirmative - there has never been a single 1.5MBit/s DD+ track from Warner - or >640kbps for that matter (Planet Earth was actually 448kbps...) - let alone a 20bit/24bit "true" lossless TrueHD track.

To make things worse: All of Warner's very rare TrueHD tracks have been transcuted/dithered 16bit - without a single exception. So much for advanced audio.

Hmm, I did not realize that. In that case, I'll probably end up buying it.

What are you talking about man Warner uses 1.5 mbps DD+ tracks too, The Fountain is one disc with a 1.5 DD+ track and there are others. The Blu Ray version had DD 640 though.

Either way with the audio, I personally like the movie, so I'll be buying it.

I would appreciate it if you do your homework BEFORE posting misinformation - The Fountain is 640kbps DD+ on HD-DVD and 640 kbps DD on Blu-Ray -> just like any other DD+/DD track from Warner. Needless to say that both our formats can do equally better in the audio department than what Warner expects us to pay for.

Buy yourself a HD-DVD drive and hook it up to a HTPC (eg. running PowerDVD) to get personal confirmation of this subject.

It looks to me as if Warner, supporting both formats, does one encode for both. If the video is VC-1 within HD-DVD 30gig, then the audio is capped at Blu-ray's 640 DD.

Yeah you're right, I was looking at the HDD review which listed it as 1.5, it is 640 though.

I guess you are right. But "playing fair" leads to "optimizing" their releases for the least common denominator in this case - which obviously is a bad thing for BOTH formats.

I would not be satisfied with anything other than AT LEAST DD+. The disk doesn't deserve a purchase otherwise. If I was solely a blu ray owner I wouldn't even bother.

I hate to resurrect an old thread, but...

I was just browsing my Amazon wishlist for this title (trying to decide between BD and HD DVD - I had both in my wishlist), and noticed the pre-order for the HD DVD is gone, but the pre-order for BD is still available.

Any ideas why it is gone? Too many pre-orders? Taking the title out of circulation while they adjust the price? WHV going BD exclusive? (Sorry for that last one - just joking...)
