View Full Version : HOT FUZZ and BLOOD DIAMOND - impossible to rent at NETFLIX

OK, this is ridiculous. They have been #1 and #2 since they were released. I recently upgraded to 3 at a time and always have made sure that I have just 2 at a time so that if either of these titles became available, they would ship.

I have NOTHING ELSE in my queue. When the two I rent return I add two titles and they go out. Follow?

This is ridiculous. Renting HD-DVD's from Netflix has become, for all intents and purposes, impossible. The titles I mentioned are not the only ones to give me hell. In most cases I have either purchased the item, or switched to renting the Blu-Ray version because the HD-DVD doesn't ship. Only HEROES has actually been shipped to me. Every other HD-DVD is in a vault somewhere.

In the case of BLOOD DIAMOND, it doesn't matter. Both are impossible. What is it with that title?!

HD-DVD's and BD's are not to be found anywhere in my town for rent, so I have no choice but to use Netflix. I'll never use Blockbuster again. That was a complete disaster.

I had a similar problem and I found a simple solution. Join Blockbuster for a trial period and only put the movies you have not been able to get from Netflix in the bb queue. For me it was Black Snake Moan and Blood Diamond. I got to see the movies I wanted and then canceled my bb account.

i got hot fuzz online the week it was released but it will be a while now before you actually get it. if you dont get it in the first week and it goes on a wait it will be a long time before you get it.

and there are a bunch of movies on bbonline that were the same way (had it a few months ago).

I was already a Blockbuster member. It was a complete disaster. They just sent me DVD's instead of HD-DVD's and nothing from the top of my queue.

I feel your pain. I made the switch from BB and the first month or so service was better. I have also had Hot Fuzz at the top since release and it still hasn't shipped. Finally went and bought it but I'm leaving it in my queue as an indicator. Also last week Disturbia finally shipped...from Ma....but I'm in CA!! Now I just received Letters from Iwo Jima and it arrived cracked in half. I don't want to give BB my money, but I never had these finds of problems! If movies are listed as Very Long Wait for over a month, don't you think they would buy more copies?

I've had blockbuster for over two years and have always been good to me. I got throttled badly on netflix because I rented 3movies a week. Never looked back. I haven't had a problem yet with hd dvds, maybe its by location but DC area seems to be great on stock.

Matt, I was having the same problem. What you want to do is switch to Blockbuster. I got hot fuzz, TMNT, Blood diamond, letters iwo jima. Then, if blockbuster starts throttling back your releases, you cancel that and go back to netflix. You can put your netflix account on hold and even see your que (I can never spell that friggin word). When you go back in and restart your account, all your movies are where you left off. Or you can x-fer your que to blockbuster manually.

Netflix puts new customers at the front of the cue. It's a ridiculous business philosophy. They shaft their most loyal customers, and give new subscribers all the benefits of the new films. It should be the other way around so there is an incentive to stay a netflix member. A 2 year member should get the titles before someone who just signed up this week, but it's exactly the opposite. After a short time, maybe two months, they throw you in the back of the line again.

I have both Netflix and Blockbuster online accounts and in general Netflix's availability is much much better than Blockbuster's. Blood Diamond I have noticed is a rare exception however, it is at the top of my list and has never been listed as available. My Netflix and Blockbuster queues are both filled with HD DVD discs and almost all of the Netflix titles say they are available now (including every disc in the recently released Heroes Season 1 set). Blockbuster on the otherhand has a short to long wait listed for nearly every title and has Heroes Season 1 only listed as "coming soon."

they ship to me from queens ny and i get my releases all the time for blu ray and hd. I guess it just varies by location on how good netflix will be for you. NY i guess is a bigger market so more movies are ordered

I'd advise for just buying Hot Fuzz, it is awesome, and has something to appeal to just about everyone.

Give Blood Diamond a rent though. I found it to be a bit too brutal in its violence, I realize that it was done to show the reality of the plight of the people in that area of Africa, but it was still a bit much. I don't think I want to see it again.

I've gotten to the point where if it's a movie I want to see and the disc gets rated, highly, I go ahead and buy it. I probably would not have seen Hot Fuzz any other way (BTW, WELL worth a purchase, I promise you... I think everyone on here would agree with that.)

As far as Blood Diamond HD DVD, it has sat on the top of my queue since the day it was released and it's still on a "Very Long Wait."

When I called to complain, the guy at customer service said they updated their classifications for their "wait" ratings. If I remember correctly, here's what he told me:

Short Wait, used to mean 3 weeks now means 1 week
Long Wait, used to mean 1 month now means 2-3 weeks
Very Long Wait, used to mean more than 3 months now means up to 1 month

Obviously this guy was full of it because Blood Diamond has been on a Very Long Wait for more than 3 months. I'd be willing to bet that by time I do finally get it the disc won't play. And so it goes...

I bought Blood Diamond because I didn't feel like waiting for it. I'm happy with the purchase. I rented [/i]Hot Fuzz[/i] from Netflix. I had to wait like two weeks or less I think. I think I hit them with all 3 of my movies at once. So, Hot Fuzz became available, and they sent it to me. Hot Fuzz has killer PQ, but it would be something I would only keep around for show purposes. IMHO, it's not a good enough movie that I want to watch it over and over again. So, I understand you wanting to rent that. Now, Casablanca is another matter!

IMHO, there are plenty of other things to add to your queue besides Blood Diamond and Hot Fuzz. That's just the nature of new releases at Netflix. Blades of Glory has been at the top of my queue for awhile. Yawn... I'll watch it eventually. I've even got a few SD DVD movies only available on Blu like Apocalypto in my queue.

Speaking of buying vs. Netflix, I've noticed that Netflix doesn't offer any used HDM for sale like they do for SD DVD. I guess that 1% of their rentals is still popular enough to keep around.

I've got a lot of HD DVDs in my queue at the moment. Blood Diamond is the only one that seems to be giving me trouble (although The Fountain tends to go in and out as well) Everything else claims to be available now. It is kind of annoying cause I've been waiting to see that.

Its also odd that Netflix hasn't gotten The Big Lebowski yet on HD DVD. At first I thought it just got delayed again but I've actually seen it in stores now.

I'll admit, Blockbuster surprises me sometimes with movies they have available as opposed to Netflix. However, if you want to stay with Netflix, here's a little trick I learned to get around their throttling. I sign up for an account under my name, keep it for about 3 months. That's about how long it takes for their throttling to kick in. I then sign my wife up for an account, and cancel my account. Before I cancel mine, I can see movies that are a "long wait" for me, "available now" under her account. I'll keep hers active for about 3 months...then cancel hers and reinstate mine. When I reinstate, throttling drops back to zero. I found this 3 month cycle seems to work pretty good.

I just sent back hot fuzz and I got black snake weeks ago. But I think if you live rural it takes longer for HD or even has to come from other distribution centers.
If there is an important release coming out, be sure that netflix gets a movie back from you on the monday before it is released on tuesday. That's the day they start sending out the new releases.

If you are purposefully NOT filling your queue each month - then you are wasting 1/3 of your month fee ($6).

In 3 months, you have just lost enough money to buy either title. Hot Fuzz is imminently rewatchable.

You're on a real tear lately -- and that is not like you. Everything ok?

I have had Hot Fuzz, Blades and the Lookout in my queue since the day they were released. All very long wait like most of us. I have the audacity to actually use the Netflix service that I pay for so they throttle me horribly day in and day out. I get movies shipped from Worcester, MA on many an occasion. I live in the desert southwest.

Last night I opened a "new" account in the wife's name for the two week trial. I put in all the movies I want but can't get into the queue. This AM, I am getting Hot Fuzz, Blades and the Lookout in HD.

I will cancel before the end of the 2 week trial but this is just crazy to have to do this to get a movie you want to watch without wating 3 months or more.

This is how Netflix works. It generally works well. It checks your local dsitribution center for a title. If it doesn't have it it goes to the next closest. They keep checking until they find a center that has it and they ship it to you. I've received discs from the west coast before. But I always have extra mailers from the nearest center since I usually put two discs in a mailer when I return them. But this way I can always send the movie to the nearest center so I have the fastest turnaround no matter where the title came from.

It is stupid on their part for not getting more of these high demand movies, if it continues I will look into changing to BB online, but it doesn't look like there are a lot of new movies coming out that I'm really interested in so only time will tell if they get any better

After a short time, maybe two months, they throw you in the back of the line again.

Interesting. I actually had a long talk a couple weeks ago with an actual customer service lady(native English speaker, to boot) from Netflix. I had called to complain about the fact that both Blood Diamond and 300(finally just got 300 Saturday) had been in my queue since they were released and I still had not gotten them after a month.

Her explanation was that the studios only allow them to purchase a limited amount of any movie for the first 30 days after release. She also stated that as soon as that period was over, they would be ordering a bunch more copies.

Another interesting statement she made was that they do give some preference for high demand titles to their customers that are on the one movie at a time plan because that way they would get to see a movie, and suggested I put some other movies in my queue. I explained to her I only signed up with Netflix to be able to rent HDDVDs and that if I couldn't get them, there would be little reason for me to continue my membership.

I advised her I thought that policy seemed a bit strange because I would think, if anything, they would give some preference to customers who were spending more money per month with Netflix.

She also made another comment that kind of aggravated me. She indicated that a good number of folks rent the big newly released titles and then just keep them for weeks, since there is no return date. (What are they doing with them? Passing them around to all their friends to watch?) I suggested that that kind of rental behavior could be used to establish preference. Just a few folks like that could significantly reduce the availability of HDDVDs. Those folks should not get early preference on HDDVDs. I told her I believe people like me who return movies after a day or two should be the ones to get some preference with new releases.

OK, end of rant.

This sorta makes since as to why I never have any problems. I have the one at a time plan with both BB and Netflix and I never have any problems getting movies. BB is a lot slower with shipping if I mail the movie back so we normally take it to the store to swap for something for the kids and it cuts off 2 days of the shipping. Netflix is always a 2 day turn around and I ALWAYS have gotten the movie at the top of my queue regardless of the status.

Hmm...maybe I should change to the one at a time plan and just use it for HDDVDs, and rent DVDs at Hastings.

I put Hot Fuzz in my queue a couple of days ago and it shipped out immediately (even though it said "Long Wait"). Blood Diamond has been there forever and has never shipped.

I closed my NetFlix account after about 3 months. As Goerge mentions above, that seems to be the time it takes for NetFlix to start throttling your account (and I was only renting about 3-4 titles per month). So, f**k them! I'll buy the HD DVDs that I really want and I now rent ALL of my standard def DVDs from the Red Box at Albertsons (supermarket). $1.00 a day from the Red Box and it's really convenient as I can rent at any Red Box and return at any Red Box.

Another interesting statement she made was that they do give some preference for high demand titles to their customers that are on the one movie at a time plan because that way they would get to see a movie...I'm one of those guys on the one-at-a-time plan, and I've had 300 at the top of my queue since before it was released. I still haven't gotten it.

I did get Hot Fuzz two weeks ago (great movie, BTW), so I guess that's a little faster.

The comment about only being able to order a limited amount of copies for the first 30 days does make sense from a studio perspective. But, it's been more than 30 day since 300 was released, and I'm still waiting.

I'm one of those guys on the one-at-a-time plan. Put Hot Fuzz HD at the top of my queue two nights ago. Got the e-mail that it will be here tomorrow.

I don't know what the issue is. I got Hot Fuzz and Blades of Glory two days after my previous movies had been returned. So "tonight I'm gonna celebrate, by going out whoring!"

I absolutely love that movie. Every time I see it I laugh so much the back of my head hurts.

Netflix is HD-DVD Rental! Bam!

And Hot Fuzz shows up today and guess what.......

Thats right, yet another damaged Combo Disc from Netflix and Universal. This one was like all the rest. Cracked and separated on the ends. I split it completley in 2 just so they wouldn't be tempted to try and send it back to someone else....

Now to see just where the replacement comes from. Any bets on Mass?

I know a guy who has been holding onto a Netflix standard DVD for over 6 months. He continues to pay the lowest subscription, but says he never has time to watch the movie.

if i hold onto a movie for even two weeks i feel i held on too long. geez 6 months

I got Hot Fuzz yesterday, watched it last night, and dropped it in the mail today for the next guy. I'm not part of the problem! :)

So, since it appears that Hot Fuzz is difficult to rent, does anyone know of a good deal for a purchase?

Update: I finally recieved Blood Diamond HDDVD on Monday!!! How many months wait was that?

I signed up for NetFlix about three weeks ago. Recieved Fot Fuzz and Blood Diamond without a problem. Not sure if this means they fixed their distribution problems or if I got lucky....

No, it means those are old movies now. The hard ones to rent now are new(er) releases like Talk to Me, Chuck and Larry, Shrek 3, Omega Man, "A Midsummer Night's Dream", etc.

IMO, if you keep your renting habits to about 4 movies a month per X-at-a-time you will not have to wait more than about 4-6 returns to get a long-wait movie. People who watch at a higher rate than this are normally the ones complaining about not getting the long-wait movies.

I receved this from California of all places took about 5 days, and they sent me a credit so I didnt have to wait 5 days to rent another title, netflix is tops in my book.
