CNET's reviewer says the TV's black level is "solid" and "deep", however Ultimate AV says it's "poor". Can someone explain this to me? How can two "experts" disagree to this extent?

I was planning on buying this TV to replace my 32" JVC CRT, but I'm having second thoughts after reading this. The "hot spot" and screen uniformity issues concern me as well.

The "hot spot" and screen uniformity issues concern me as well. With factory settings there is no hot spot or screen uniformity issues using RGB. The fact that Ultimate AV says it not as bright as a bulb says a lot, other reviews say you need sunglasses! Maybe I haven't calibrated the display yet for black level, but I have no hot spot or brightness uniformity issues with my own 6189S. I also seen the xx87S at several stores and saw no bright area. With the display off, yes you will see a minor bit of light reflected from external light sources from internal mirror.

Try to wait for a scene that is mostly all white, such as during an ad and see if can't spot the hot area throughout the center area of the screen. But for most scenes it's hard to notice a hot spot. Utlimately, you're living with the set, not the reviewer, though.
