View Full Version : My SXRD has burn-in...

Near the bottom of my SXRD, there is a blue glow. I just noticed this glow and it was not there previously (it is noticeable when using my Xbox 360 and PS3).

The position and color of it appears to be related to the Tivo connected to it where the bottom of the guide (which is a blue box) is positioned. However, it appears when the Tivo is not being used (and the TV is set to a different input).

I have not heard of SXRDs having similar problems (although I do remember cases of green glowing a couple years ago). This seems clearly to be a case of burn-in.

I was under the impression that SXRDs could not get burn-in do to the fact that they are...well...RPLCDs. Does anyone have any idea what to do about this? I'm sure it's no longer covered by a warranty--this is the A2000 model.

Here are a couple of images to show the blue glow. The glow is inside of the impressively professional dotted-line box:

I agree with 84 Jeepjohn. We both had the same generation LCD RPTV's, the GW3 Sony. They have the optical block/light engine issue. It is dust or as the tech I had called it "contamination" and they usually swap out the block and do not clean it. Hopefully you have an extended warranty because this is almost a guarantee of an issue when dealing with LCD RPTV's or even DLP's where dust can get into the cabinet.

Update: I gave Sony a call, went through some of their standard, "God help us, we hope this is enough to get the guy to give up" steps (unplug, wait, etc.) and they gave me a number for an authorized service center to have someone come out and take a look at it (aka: they know it's a problem and there is probably a service bulletin posted for it). So when the place opens tomorrow I will give them a call and set up an appointment.

I'm also going to see if there are any other repairs that can be done. I came across an article on engadgethd about a failed 1080i test pattern on the A2000s. Mine is an early A2000 (July '06, when they first came out) so perhaps I have been missing out on some of my HDness...

I appreciate the advice from everyone and I'll update when something happens. Any new suggestions are also welcome. Thanks, fellas.

Early SXRDs suffered from the green/yellow blob problem, Sony lost a class action suit related to that problem. PRE-SXRD LCD sets can suffer from the blue blob/fog problem.

Couldn't get your pics to load. Is the blue area "clearly" the same as the Tivo guide (sharp outlines) or is it "foggy".

I am having this issue now. its no blob, though it is greenish. it's a burn from the given channel's logo bug. distinct "FX HD" or slug line from ESPN. goes away after a while, just to be replaced with another logo.

what's my next step?

The same image retention happened to me and it got worse over time. Had to have the optical block replaced. I believe yours is headed down the same path. You can get your optical blocked replaced for free until June 30th 2009.
