I've been searching forums and can't find any reference to this anywhere. Has anyone tried it? Can it be done? If so, what is the PQ? What is the PQ if done on the PC as opposed to the PS3?

Netflix lists the system requirements and I'm guessing that the PS3 night not be able to do this due to the fact that it isn't running a Windows XP or Vista OS, right?

If it isn't capable of doing this at present, might a future software update allow this?

I like immediate gratification...I hate waiting for discs via mail...I hate scratched discs that skip (a problem for the HD-A1, not the PS3).

Any help/comments appreciated.

To which of the 4 questions that can be adequately answered with a "yes" or "no" answer are you replying with your "No"?

Thanks

Saying 'No' to Netflix working on PS3 kinda means 'No' to all of your other questions.

Why is it not realistic to expect that a future software update could enable this functionality?

Please enlighten me. Thanks for saving me from wasting the time trying it tonight after getting the youngster to bed.

One key thing: Netflix's current solution depends on Microsoft's WMDRM, which Sony is unlikely to license or implement. Heck, Macintosh systems aren't even supported by Netflix. PS3 can't even play Amazon Unbox downloaded content via UPnP AV ("DLNA"), because it doesn't handle WMDRM/WMV. Not sure what the future will be like...

I'm betting you'll see a "Xbox Live" style movie rental service from Sony itself before they work with Netflix on a PS3 specific solution. Feel free to ask Netflix, though. Anyway, the current Netflix video quality is nothing compared to the HD content Xbox Live has... but they may improve it.

One thing's for sure, Microsoft will not license WMDRM to run on Mac OS. For years they lied claiming it could be licensed, but we all knew it was bogus drivel. The same will apply to Linux and Sony.

Heck, the Netflix software won't even let me run it in Windows XP 64bit and that is a platform that is 1) Windows 2) has all the MSFT DRM support 3) x86 compatible

PS3 has a crappy browser, it won't even let me log into my citibank account.

Plays YouTube though.

I like the PS3 browser.

The new Sony MP3 players support WM DRM and one of the recent articles said that Stringer mandated the same DRM platform on all products. I'm no fan of WM DRM but it sounds like there's a possibility that it could happen.

I think NetFlix wouldn't necessarily be accessed from the browser but maybe a custom XMB app, but who knows.

Netflix requires software to run - so it all depends on whether they want to make a version for the PS3 and whether Sony wants a version. Seeing as the PS3's browser has trouble loading pages a Windows 95 computer can load with no problems, I wouldn't expect this function to ever arrive. Besides, you only get stereo and the picture is quite crappy, so what's the point?

Sony plans on their own movie distribution service over the PS3.

Hopefully it's decent and not Netflix Watchitnow quality.

PS3 browser is based on Linux and Linux is not DRM friendly. It is highly unlikely that WMDRM will be available on a Linux based browser in near future (okay, never is more like it). As others have already mentioned, WMDRM is strictly for Windows platform only. There are some Linux mobile devices with WMDRM support, but not on a full system like PS3.

I guess Netflix, if motivated, could try to develop their own Linux-based DRM system. But that is also highly unlikely as the market share of Linux users are small and as a whole very anti-DRM.

The PS3 browser is a version of the closed source Opera browser. The same one that runs on most mobile phones. It has nothing at all to do with Linux.

I just tried it. It says "Your system is not compatible with this feature. Try again from a computer running Windows XP SP2 or Windows Vista".

Yes, even your computer has to download the Netflix viewer software to get it work, let alone on a PS3
