I have a Vizio 37" 720P and an old Progressive scan DVD player connected via component. If I get one of the Oppo's, connect it HDMI, will I see a difference from my LazyBoy? I don't mean a measurable difference if I have $10k in lab equipment, I mean can I see the difference? I love to buy toys, but there has to be a benefit. Oh, for the more comical of you, my vision is much better than 20/20 :)

As per OPPO representitive you might see a 15 to 20% improvement over your normal DVD player.

It's hard to say. Some people try all sorts of gear and see no difference.

I moved from a 1999-era non-progressive component player to the Oppo 971 (and now the 981 and 980) and saw a big improvement on a 37" LCD. Not night and day, but enough that I want it.

An example, after "messing" with my various players and cables one day, I watched a complete movie and thought, "this title is not mastered very well; I thought it would be better." Then I noticed I had left the player at 480i, letting the display do the deinterlacing and scaling. That works ok for come combinations of gear, but in my case the upscaling player produces better results.

Sam_jo - 15-20% although that is a salesmans line, is quite impressive.

wmcclain - Thanks for the reply. I think that like a lot of folks I am waiting for the "format wars" to end and will bide my time with what I have(no BD or HDDVD). I was thinking that the OPPO might give me a couple of years and some visual improvement. I may pick one up and play.
