I have just upgraded to a 65" Mitsubishi DLP, the DirecTV installers are 3 weeks delays in getting my new HD DVR box so I currently have the TV hooked to my RCA UltimateTV unit still.

After switching the TV I changed the UltimateTV screen setting to 16:9. The wife had a recording a couple hours ago on TNT that appears to be recorded incorrectly, the picture is clipped at the top and bottom edges (The TNT logo is mostly cut off) and has horrible quality, worse that the other standard recording.

I say this is "recorded wrong" because if I change the DLP display formats for standard TV to the standard non-stretched format the picture is still clipped. The wife said the show is usually broadcast in widescreen, but I can't confirm that. It looks like the UltimateTV took a widescreen version of the image and clipped it. Another telling sign the picture appears clipped in the tiny "My Shows" windows as well.

Does anyone know what the problem is?

Perhaps the problem is I'm just not thinking...there is no 16:9 on 480i...why on earth does the UltimateTV unit have a 16:9 setting on it? I'm going to set it back 4:3.

So did the "recording" re-format OK at 4:3... Or did the 16:9 "screw" up the aspect ratio of the recording permanently?

I was originally going to suggest the issue was that the TV isn't recognizing the UTV's 16:9 display format properly...

Only some shows respond to the 16:9 and 4:3 settings.

A tip: If you pause your show, then go to the screen size you can change the format and then hit exit (without choosing done). You will now see the screen in the old format until you single frame it (choose 30 sec skip while in pause mode). It will then instantly change, if it's going to change. You can get back using the back key and revert to your original setting and do it again if you like.

My in-laws had this problem and I tracked it down to the screen format on the TV. I do not remember what the setting was but it was almost like a zoom feature.

Changing the setting back to 4:3 format fixed it. The current recording stayed in the odd format for several minutes then suddenly switched to normal.
