View Full Version : Topgun...HD wow (HDnet for now)
Can not wait for the HD DVD release of Topgun. Just watched it on HDnet and it looked so good. HDNet.ca has very good HD movies/content without many artifacts that I have notice. The Topgun HD presentation look really  good. Got it recorded on the PVR and will be intrested to compare vs the HD DVD when it comes out :D.
lgans316 09-11-07, 12:32 AM I think Paramount had recently passed on a fresh HD master to all the broadcasters across the globe coz it looked extremely sharp and vibrant.
wildchild22 09-11-07, 12:46 AM too bad that the bell hdnet broadcast was so full of audio dropouts

I get HDnet via rogers cable...no drops of any sort and surprising no vid macro blocking either that occured on some of the broadcast HDnet movies in the past.
I didn't catch this one on HD Net but I know I can't wait for the HD DVD to show up at my door.
HDNet always has great feeds. Have you ever seen the MMA shows they have on it? Wow! Spike needs to go HD so they can start showing their UFC shows in HD. :)

thewretched22 09-11-07, 02:40 PM Glad to hear that it looks great in HD, i was really nervous about this one. Can't wait for October 2nd.

 People harp on that one scene so much, it's clearly a gay themed movie seeing how he sleeps with a woman later on.
I watched it last night (PVR'd it as well) and I also saw it on HD Net a few months back. Can't wait for the HD DVD :D

Hey Slider.... You Stink;)

If thats what turns YOU on then go for it :D. But everybody sweats in most of the movie...in the planes, in the Enterprise flight control, everywhere. Boy couldnt they afford AC on the set :D.
Just a little thing. At the end of the movie when Mav says he is going to Topgun as a fight instructor. Goose's name tag is still on the locker next to his. Goose's tag would have been long gone. Prob because they filmed all the carrier scenes at the same time and somebody forgot to take the tag down in that scene. Just conjector on my part.
Robert Spalding 09-11-07, 03:27 PM I believe the term is homoerotic
Top Gun did look good on HDNET. There is grain ( but that is natural given the film stock) but the overall PQ was very good. I put it on a DVHS tape.
It is a sweaty movie. Everyone seems to be sweating alot in plenty of scenes. I don't believe this is an indication of sexual preference however :)

Had an ex GF that love that scene. Those 24packs....(4x6) :D. OK maybe 18 since Goose isnt a 6 pack.
Dave Mack 09-11-07, 04:01 PM How was the sound...?
Cam Man 09-11-07, 04:06 PM just love that sweaty volleyball game huh?
Man, my wife does :D Always has...and now our daughter does. Our kids (teenagers now) roar at the final line in that scene "Mother Goose, you pussy!" I always get a good laugh at Kelly M's line about how she's fallen for Maverick.
Yes, it would appear that a spritz bottle was always nearby to give the actors that overkill sweaty look.
This is a favorite despite the yucks. The wifey and I met while I was flying in the military and she was a lifeguard on base...about the time the movie was made. Fun nostalgia. I'm sure it's gonna be an awesome release and great big screen experience to revisit.
Malcolm_B 09-11-07, 04:32 PM The last DVD DTS 6.1 sound mix is amazing (played part of it just the other day), so hopefully this HD presentation can at least match it.
The HDNET.ca feed is horrible.
Watched it the other night, a TON of artifacts and horrible film grain.
Let's all pray the HD-DVD is from a far superior master.

The HDnet.ca feed was great from my provider . The HD DVD will prob from the same master.
How was the sound...?
Sound was OK but I can only get stereo for some reason and not 5.1 even tho its contected via optical to my AVR.
Dave Mack 09-11-07, 05:46 PM It's all about the provider. My comcast HD looks very good. Same channels at my Uncle in law's place through DirecTV look atrocious. Unwatchable IMHO. They ought call it "LeggoHD" with all the blocks going on during fast motion scenes.
:)

I saw it on HDnet as well from Rogers cable and I thought it looked way to grainy. Not impressed at all and my signal is strong.
Perhaps on a 32" it would have looked good but not on my 61".
HPforMe 09-11-07, 06:04 PM Looked not bad. Sparkles in the print were annoying though and many scenes didn't look crisp. There was some sound problems on the broadcast through Bell Express Vu and picture breakup problems. Not something I would have DVR'd if I had one. Really can't wait for the HD disk version.

LegoHD, lol.......I'm starting to see that far too often now, especially on sports. I'm starting to wonder if something is going on with RogersCable in my area because my HD DVDs are crystal clean and so is the Xbox360 and SD DVDs, yet only some programs on HDnet look really good.

My main set is 60"
Most of the grain appears in low light conditions. Thats what it looked like at the thearter also (if mem hasnt failed me).
Sweet, my copy shipped today so I should have it by the weekend. With this and Knocked Up coming this will be a great weekend.
