Several HDTV Nets Remain Down Following Fire

A&E, History, YES and NFL Network Knocked Out
By Linda Moss -- Multichannel News, 9/11/2007 1:41:00 PM

Two HDTV networks were back on the air, but two others remained down Tuesday in the wake of a fire at a Stamford, Conn., building that houses facilities for several programmers and a company that does uplinking for them.

A&E Network HD, The History Channel HD, YES Network HD and NFL Network HD were initially knocked out of service following an early morning fire Monday at 250 Harbor Drive in Stamford.

But by Tuesday afternoon, A&E Television Networks was upconverting its standard-definition signal to HD as a temporary measure so it could resume delivering HD feeds for A&E Network HD and History Channel HD, according to spokesman Lynn Gardner.

However, the HD feeds of both YES Network and NFL Network were still down Tuesday afternoon. NFL Network expected its HD network to be black until Wednesday evening, according to spokesman Seth Palansky.

As for YES Network’s HD signal, spokesman Eric Handler said, “We’re looking to get it up and running as soon as possible.”

The building with the fire housed facilities for Ascent Media Group, which uplinks the HDTV feeds of the four networks. Officials for Ascent couldn’t be reached for comment.

YES Network and AETN also have offices in the Stamford building, which was still without electrical power Tuesday.

The fire took place in a building at the same complex as corporate headquarters for Time Warner Cable, which is located at 290 Harbor Drive in Stamford.

Both YES Network’s and NFL Network’s standard definition networks were off the air very briefly Monday morning as a result of the fire, according to Handler and Palansky, but both SD signals were back up quickly Monday.

The regional sports network and NFL Network was working Tuesday to restore their HDTV signals.

YES Network is headquartered in Manhattan, but has some facilities, including a HDTV studio and control room, in the Stamford building, according to Handler.

Seth Palansky, a NFL Network HD spokesman, told TVPredictions.com that it will be 24-72 hours before the real high-def signals can be restored.

I called YES Network and they said the HD channel should be restored by Friday, 9/14.

A&E HD is now stretching the SD signal.

4 HD Channels Back On Air
The networks lost their signals due to a building fire.
By Swanni

Washington, D.C. (September 14, 2007) -- The four High-Definition channels that were knocked off the air this week due to a building fire have resumed broadcasting in high-def.

The channels -- NFL Network HD, A&E HD, History Channel HD and YES Network HD -- were knocked off the air Monday due to a three-alarm fire at the Stamford, Connecticut building where the HD signals originate.

But the channels were able to restore their HD signals yesterday after local fire officials permitted employees to return to the building.

The four networks, including NFL Network HD, switched to standard-definition signals at one point so they could resume broadcasting on the HD channels. The networks upconverted the standard-def signals so they came close to HD quality.

A Stamford fire official said the building's main office was not damaged, but smoke spread throughout much of the building. More than 45 fire fighters were called to the scene.

Came close to HD quality? Well that is stretching the truth (and the picture) abit.

Well, it's hard to tell for NFL HD, but A&E HD and THC HD are still running stretched SD. The current program on THC HD is listed in the program guide as HD (and the guide has been pretty accurate thus far), but it is certainly still the SD feed.

It was reported here that YES returned to HD for last night's Yankee game.

YES, but that isn't enough to make Swanni's claim true. He said,

Since A&E and THC have not resumed broadcasting in high-def, his claim was false.

Before the fire A&E HD was showing many of the programs in 4:3 SD...
2 Coreys, Dog BH, 24, Confession Of Matchmaker, Criss Angel to name a few!
I emailed the over 2 weeks ago and No reply. On the new History Channel HD,
I might of seen at least 1 program in Real HD all the rest in 4:3 SD!
It seems A&E are a bunch of lamers!

NFL and HD Net in Real HD!

Well...I really enjoyed "Lost Worlds" on History, and THAT was in HD. Dying to see the 'star wars' show in HD, but haven't yet.

So yes, I am missing it. :(

Fredfa just posted this in the news thread (thank you again, fred!), thought I'd put a link here as well...

so the channels are back, but are they 'really' back? Are they in real HD or still upconverted stretch?

A&E has been back on Comcast for two days, but it's still the upconverted and stretched SD feed.

Well, I'm still puzzled why the NFL is starting its second season and Total Access remains in SD. Must be a money shortage.
