View Full Version : Poll: Is Your 2005 SXRD XBR1 Still OK?
audiomixer 09-12-07, 02:28 PM For those of us with 2005 SXRD XBR1s...have you ever had a problem which required a new OB or a replacement set? I had my original October 2005 build replaced with an April 2006 build and have not had any problems since...Knock on wood.
Just curious...
(And post build dates and how many months you have owned your set.)
Thanks for playing!
slapshot 09-12-07, 07:33 PM Voted, mine is still ok. build date Jan'06,same month of purchase.
However,a cousin of mine bought the exact same set,5 months later, (not sure of build date)and was deemed unrepairable by Circuit City last month. They just delivered a KDS 60A3000 yesterday for a replacement.

UxiSXRD 09-12-07, 09:19 PM So far, so good. :knock on wood:
Certainly hoping nothing happens at least until the XBR5 is out. :D
audiomixer 09-13-07, 01:17 PM Anyone, else?
Mine is just starting to exhibit a slight green to yellowish stain in the upper middle portion of the screen. It is very noticeable to me but I don't want to call yet because I don't want a hassle with Sony or the repair company as to how bad is bad.

That's what happened to my original SXRD, Don't recal the model.
UxiSXRD 09-14-07, 05:23 PM Think all the others got scared off by the trolls. :D Free bump for you.
I have had a green cast for a year, Oct 2005 build? I don;t have the patience for the hassle of an OB replacement, hopefully sony will give me a credit towards the XBR3
omnisxrd 09-16-07, 12:25 PM Bought mine on a whim without really knowing anything about the TV - aside from the fact that I really liked the picture. At the time I was working at Sony (playstation side) and got a discount but damn did the TV drop in price quickly after that. Got mine in November'ish of 2005 - 50" for like 2700 if I remember right.
Never had a problem.
JohnnytheSkin 09-16-07, 08:01 PM Hell no!!
I've had two optical blocks replaced and STILL have the pink on the bottom and Best Buy is being an utter dick on a replacement (my service company...meaning theirs...won't replace the part again and I want to downsize and get a credit on the original purchase price as I upgraded to a Mits DLP).
GFelizardo 09-17-07, 08:33 AM Sept. 05 build date, I think. I've had the set since Nov. 2005. No problems so far.
Mine finally went south. It was a nov. 05 build. It took a year and a half, but I eventually got the "green Blob". It started showing signs the end of July, and by the end of August, it was 80% green. They just fixed it free of charge.
For those who don't know, Sony has extended the warranty for the Optical Block for all of the XBR1s, regardless of when you bought it, until October 2008.
They now replace them free of charge, and hassle free too.
If you have a problem, call them.

EDIT: They apparently figured out how to build optical blocks for these sets. My new one looks better than my old one ever did. They are also build (time wise) specific. They have to have the serial number in order to get a matching OB-the serviceman said there are 2 different types.
WaldorfSalad 09-23-07, 12:04 AM I wish they had come up with this new and improved OB before I baled on my (repaired twice and replaced) 50XBR1 earlier this year. The XBR1 was a much better TV than the 55A2020 I now have.
Mine just started to have a problem where I turn it on it gets video for about one second then shuts off and it flashes a red light four times. I've also had the green tint problem since I bought it.
Deinonych 09-23-07, 11:26 AM Just had my original OB replaced. Yellow blob/haze started appearing late last year and got progressively worse. It finally got to the point where I couldn't stand it anymore. Replacement looks great!

It takes less than an hour for a competent technician to replace the OB. To me, it's well worth the minimal time investment. It's much less of a hassle than trying to get Sony to give you a credit.

Mine took a couple of hours, but he also cleaned out the inside, including the fans, checked convergence, centered the picture, ran test signals etc.
Still, well worth the t9me to get it fixed.

audiomixer 09-24-07, 08:10 PM Bump.
George Cifranci 09-24-07, 10:08 PM I started noticing yellow splotches on the top and on other areas of the screen a few weeks ago. I called my local Sony repair shop and they have the OB on order and when they get it in (in a day or two) they will call me and schedule a time to replace it. The repair shop said they have done a number of these and that it takes around 45 minutes.

freewilly 11-13-07, 08:09 PM Well, I'm not sure what to do. I have a 9/05 build 60XBR1. Has been perfect, but last night when watching any picture that was primarily white, I noticed a yellow streak on the bottom right corner which extended to about the middle of the screen. Not real bad, but now that I know it is there, I will always notice it.
I called the Sony 800 number listed on the class action lawsuit- what a joke. The lady could barely speak English and kept reading from a prepared text. Today, I called the retailer and they seemed to be aware of the problem. However, they do not do in home repair- but they will come and get the TV at least. I purchased their 5 year warranty, so i suppose they would just bill Sony.
Should I wait until it gets worse? Part of me is afraid that I may end up with a worse problem with a new optical block- what do you think? I suspect I'll have it done because now I will always notice that yellow streak- plus it spunds like it will eventually get worse.
Hey guys. The new OBs are not good. I had a Nov 2005 xbr1 60" purchased Dec 05. Replaced the OB due to green corner in Oct 06. The new OB picture was absolutely beautiful. 2 weeks later had purple donut issue. Best Buy replaced that TV with an A2000 in Dec 06. It was terrible picture quality. BB then replaced the A2000 with another xbr1 in Jan 07. That OB went green corner last month. OB was replaced on Oct 19th. As soon as we turned it on it had the purple donut problem. It has improved slightly since then but still is unacceptable. After much much hassle with Sony early last week, they are replacing the OB, again. Today, 11-13-07 and still no word on the replacement OB delivery date.
Do you have any Purple or Green Donuts audiomixer
audiomixer 11-14-07, 01:14 PM Do you have any Purple or Green Donuts audiomixer
None...I just get a little green at start-up...worse in cold weather...but it's gone in 5 minutes...no sign of it on grayscale.
craigap 11-14-07, 01:17 PM I'm getting my OB changed out this Friday provided the part comes in. (April 06 build.) My service tech said the problem is due to dust on the color chip covering the red leaving only yellow and blue in that area. Don't know how accurate that is. Green tint was in the bottom right hand corner. The service tech also told me that it was likely to reoccur because sony was sending out the same OB's to replace it.
memomuffin 11-23-07, 06:10 PM Funny isn't it how I've been researching a new TV for my mom these passed couple weeks (bought one this morning) only to come home to my XBR1 to find the dreaded green blob in the lower right hand corner of my TV. (Manufuacturing date of Jan/06). I have the CC warranty so they will be sending out someone in @ a week. Now do I understand correctly that the green blob is attributed to the OB, or is that a different problem?
I swear it's Murphy's law, all I've been saying is how great my TV has been
"No problems at all", never should have opened my mouth!
UxiSXRD 11-23-07, 06:20 PM You saying (or not saying) anything didn't have any effect. So far, so good, but I doubt my critiques of trolling, paid schills, or lynch mob whimsy have made more or less succeptible, either. I've never believed the problems were systemic or endemic, but I could well be proven wrong at some point. In any case, Sony has already extended the warranty through 2008 and will probably go to 2009. That's all any of us need be concerned with.
Would be nice if they could do a 1080p120 engine to go with the new blocks, though. Would make my lusting over the 70XBR5 moot anyways. :D
