About 50% with high-definition reception say they 'always' make the effort to watch in HD; also more likely to plan viewing
Interesting article, especially the part about DVR'ing HD
OrleansDawg 09-13-07, 11:33 AM I would agree. I have watched more TNT-HD and ESPN-HD then any other channel and I didnt before HD

I once watched a documentary on DiscoveryHD (I think that was the channel) about watch making because the picture was so crisp and detailed. Now granted this was when I first got my 50" plasma so at that time I would have watched Hilary Clinton for 8 hours straight as long as it was in HD.

lol Robert. Worse case scenario of screen burn in..Hillary Clinton...
Marcus Carr 09-13-07, 12:16 PM Could they have used smaller text?
What I found interesting was "...while 20% of homes now have an HDTV set, less than two-thirds (61%) of those homes have true high-definition reception." It used to be about half or less so maybe things are improving.

This just baffles me. A friend of mine just bought a HD set and didn't upgrade his receiver. He said it is just fine, didn't want to pay the extra $10 a month. I said, " you just paid $1200 for a TV and you don't want to pay $10 per month" Absolutely insane. I am having serious issues with Dishnetwork getting out a tech to install this thing. I'm going crazy waiting on this HD.

I have yet to see any HD set THAT good! :) But it does go to show you how HD is addicting.
kentondb 09-13-07, 04:12 PM I just got my HDTV and programming around three weeks ago.
When I go to watch TV, I scroll through the HD channels first. I used to watch quite a bit of CNN/Headline News and now I'm always watching something girly on HGTV just because of the quality of the source.
Another example was when DVD really came out I was a bit young to build up a collection (15 or so when it got popular) and now that I have an HD-DVD player I've easily bought 3x more movies in the past month than I ever did on DVD.
No surprise with that study.

I think you are talking about a program that was on HDNet. I have to admit even at HD-Lite it still looked pretty good. I can only imagine at 1920 and 18 mbps.....
Anyways, no real surprise. I'm more surprised Swanni's name isn't on it.

If it were his article, it would mention how ugly we think people nowlook in HD.
At any rate, I watch shows I like in HD whenever possible. I don't watch anything just because it's in HD. Crap in HD is still crap.
nataraj 09-13-07, 07:04 PM lol Robert. Worse case scenario of screen burn in..Hillary Clinton...
"Worse" case scenario ? I guess the worst case is when someone like Giuliani is on it even for a few minutes ... afterall we are talking about high contrast white & black here.
I bet Faux News has reported that its all Clinton's fault ... even the screen burn ;)
hdjeff724 09-13-07, 07:28 PM I watch HD 95% of the time now. Only time when I don't watch HD is when I'm checking out Fox News or CNN, and when I watch baseball games on the Extra Innings Package.
Marcus Carr 09-14-07, 12:40 AM There are three live-action SD shows from my pre-HD days that I still watch. Everything else has been converted to HD or gone off the air. I only check out new shows that are in HD. I only channel surf the HD channels.
mr. wally 09-14-07, 05:01 PM i fit the survey, but i don't watch sd on my xbr2. it's such a waste. only hd for me on that puppy.
don't know if d* and e*'s hd lite (1080 x 1440) constitutes true hd for survey purposes, but i'm staying with my 40 hd channels on e* until something better comes along.
kenglish 09-15-07, 10:36 AM What bugs me, is, people who buy an expensive HDTV set, all the expensive M-Cables, and the fancy plug strips, power conditioners, etc....then, they say they're not gonna "waste" their money on a $10 pair of rabbit ears, or a $40 Silver Sensor. They say they'll "just wait until we can afford DirecTV" to get HD.

that's a laugh and a half! there are people with OTA HD available who wait until they can get directv or cable in HD... and I can't even get HD OTA where I am! If I could I'd be all over it.
cube799 09-15-07, 07:37 PM to me this is like someone buying a Color TV back they were becoming popular and only watching Black and white Shows. Why bother buying an HDTV if they're only going to watch SD content. It also bothers me that people spend so much money on an HDTV and refuse to spend a little more to get HD content from either a pay service or over the air. I say the FCC should make Cable Card slots Mandatory on all new HDTVs. I'm assuming they eventually made all analog TVs Cable ready since I've never seen an Analog TV that wasn't cable ready. Why can't they do that with Digital Cable?
as for my viewing habits, I'm an HD Snob. If it's not in HD I'm not gonna watch it unless it's really good or News. I watch Frasier and Friends , As well as other Syndicated shows in SD, but that's because their really good. I was also really disappointed to learn that Syndicated Shows weren't in HD even if the show had at least the last seasons in HD. I remember seeing that King of Queens was in HD on CBS but the reruns on FOX weren't in HD.
I've heard that some people have used Peer to Peer Websites to Download shows in HD. can't the stupid TV stations do something like this but Legally. Each company that does Syndication should have A Highly Secure Area of their website that Only TV Stations have access to where they have all the Shows available in HD for Download.
My computer can connect to my HDTV if I use a DVI to HDMI Cable don't they have a way to connect their computers to an HDTV, then to an antenna or whatever they use to broadcast. They must otherwise how else would they send out the HD signal. From what I understand they have a giant satellite Dish or more than one and they connect that to a Computer, an HDTV, or both so they can preview the signal and then Broadcast it with a slight delay. They do this all live why can't they download an MPEG-2 file from website like the one I mentioned and then broadcast it at a later time. To simplify the process the websites could offer the file in 1080i or 720p format at the recommended bit rate for broadcasting at these resolutions. Then if the station is Multicasting they could compress the signal to the bit rate they use for the HD Channel and then broadcast it. They have broadcast Equipment valued in 10-100 thousand dollar range or maybe even more for the bigger markets and they can't do something like this! Sheesh!!
"HD viewers are less likely to say they are inclined to purchase from advertisers during HD programs than non-HD viewers are from advertisers on regular TV programs (23% vs 37%)"
That's great incentive for programs on commercial outlets to go HD. Even more to make HD commercials.
broadwayblue 09-15-07, 10:09 PM Well, for the past 2.5 years since I got my HD front projector my motto has been "If it's not HD, it's dead to me." I don't even channel surf outside of the HD range.
Why bother buying an HDTV if they're only going to watch SD content.
One reason is that people can hardly believe how much better SD content looks on their HDTVs compared to their old analog sets. Take a look at the NTSC reception on some newer sets. Digital processing has really improved analog reception. Some sets are able to make it look almost as clean as SD digital reception.
richiephx 09-15-07, 11:24 PM lol Robert. Worse case scenario of screen burn in..Hillary Clinton...
LOL....how can something so cold and unanimated cause burn in?
MeowMeow 09-16-07, 12:08 AM I only plan to watch football and a few TV shows to start with. Football was my main motive for going HD. If that is planning, then I am a planner.
OrleansDawg 09-16-07, 12:43 AM My mother knows nothing about HD channels or football
But, we were watching games in HD all day/night and later tonight we switched to ESPN classic for the UK/Louisville game and she looked at the TV and said "Wait, Wait, Wait....this isnt in HD...change the channel!"
I laughed a bit....that is what HD can do to ya
Kingcarcas 09-16-07, 02:37 AM Have to agree there, i've blocked most of the channels out of my Moxi. For some reason my show "A Haunting" only comes out on SD Discovery channel, so i have to put up with that. Ghost Hunters on Sci-Fi and the History channel. There's a good chance we'll be going back to D* because i doubt TWC will get the HD versions anytime soon.

That's because the newer analog sets try to do it all on a single chip. You should see how a really old analog set looks....great!
Someone, three or four years ago, found an old, unbuilt Heathkit color TV in her Father's estate. No one on e-bay touched it, so she wrote to Broadcast Engineering magazine. Started a stampede, as engineers tried to buy it from her. I'm still watching my 1982 RCA XL-100 at home. But, with an LG DTV tuner on it.
Marty Milton 09-16-07, 01:22 PM I can certainly add my experience to this. I hardly ever watched golf on TV. Now that I have it available in HD, I have been watching the final round of many of the golf tournaments this summer. They are phenominal in HD. I have a friend that is an avid golfer and watches golf in TV. I have told him that if he watches one golf tournament in HD, he will go out the next day to purchase his own HD set.
