I just purchased the yamaha HTR-5930 and hooked up my old (really old) speakers that have 15" subs in them with the speakers and everything and i got no bass what-so-ever. Now i had them hooked up to a really old reciever and they pounded extremely well so i have no clue what the deal is. I have tried every setting in the manual and cant figure out whats going on?

You probably have the speakers set to "small". This assumes you are routing the bass to a subwoofer. If you aren't using a sub, go into the setup and change the main speaker size to "large" or subwoofer to "none"

yeah i messed around with all of that, ive tried every setting and combination possible and nothing seems to work. could it be wiring cuz the wires i am using are older as well. i also tried hooking up newer bookshelf speakers with subs in them and i got nothing from them either so im pretty sure its the reciever or im just dumb...thanks for the reply

It should not be the wire, even if your using a thin gauge and even if you had the wires hooked up wrong to the + - terminals you should get some bass. I was going to say that you have the crossover, speaker size, and sub setting wrong in the receiver but you say you don't. If your not using a sub, you would want the mains set to large and the sub setting turned off with no crossover. By the way, those would most likely be 15" woofers not subs in your speakers. It may be the receiver is bad if it does the same thing with other speakers, or you have some settting wrong. Right out of the box it should give you some bass. You didn't turn the tone control way down or EQ settings down in the bass category did you?
Where did you buy the AVR? If locally, take it into the store and have them hook it up to see if they have the same problem...

Were you using the "Loudness" or other bass boosting feature on your old receiver?

I bought the reciever at best buy, brand new not refurbished or anything. I turned the bass all the way up changed the Front to large and the subwoofer to off. Ill have to take it in and have them hook it up and show me cuz im lost.
and to the other question, on my old reciever there was no loudness setting just a knob to turn the bass up so i turned it all the way up and it pounded.

Normally you want to leave tone controls to the neutral setting.

Make sure the speakers are wired in phase to your receiver. Out of phase speakers will have less bass (but not no bass).;)
