There is a code you enter with the remote to make it region free.

I don't think vendors are required to keep this a secret but in the US it is generally not widely publicized. Something to do with the policies of certain trade groups.

Like Bill says, region free playback is not a feature that you will see advertised by DVD player makers. For the OPPO players, however, there is a simple hidden menu that is well documented around here (check the first post of the 970HD (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=682896), 980H (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=879341), and 981HD (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=760726) threads).

Do the Oppo players also convert PAL>NTSC?

I don't need HDMI - I have an older HD Philips 34" CRT.

Yes, all the OPPO models do PAL to NTSC, with the DV-981HD being the best of the lot.

Thanks for the response. I assumed it did, and have been tempted. That might make the 981 an attractive investment. It's overkill for my present set-up, but I plan to buy a big screen...something...to upgrade within the next 18 months.

The other option I was considering was one of the Philips on the cheap.

My old JVC could get a little jumpy on the conversion and I don't want to go through that again.
