Question about avi's and AC3 audio.

Ok, I have a few avi movies and some are ac3 encoded. If I make a cd/dvd of these movies and put into the oppo will the dvd player play them? and will the AC3 audio be picked up?

I am told AC3 is basically compressed 5.1 surround or something simular.

is this correct? and will oppo 980 play it that way? or am I out of luck?

thanks for your help

I think you are ok, although I am away from my test notes at the moment. This presumes that the video in your avi is supported; remember avi is just a container format and can have all sorts of contents.

Looks like the videos are XviD. I guess that is divx so it should work.

THanks

I have another question to boot.

This is what it says about audio..
Compatible with Audio CD, HDCD, WMA, Kodak Picture CD, and
other digital audio/video/picture media and formats

If I put in a disc with mp3, flak, ogg or wav will it play those? I am not sure what audio codecs HDCD, DTS, SACD are so..just curious.

Sorry for n00b questions, but hopefully somebody can either point me to a good source to read about this or help.

I do appreciate the help.

mp3 and ogg: yes. flak and wav: no. HDCD and SACD are commercial disc formats. DTS is another surround sound system. You can look all those things up in the wikipedia, eg: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Theater_System.
