I am currently watching UHD on D*; guys are doing tricks on BMX bikes. It is almost unwatchable sometimes because of Motion Pixlation. Does anyone else notice this; I just had my service upgraded to the 5LNB about 3 weeks ago and I don't remember it being this bad before the upgrade.

When the picture is stationary it looks great, but as soon as there is movement it goes to hell.

Welcome to the wonderful world of overcompression. If you give me a specific time code for a sequence you consider unwatchable, I'll post a clip of what you would see on another provider.

Thanks for the reply bfdtv; what is a time code? Really no need to post the clip though, I just wanted to make sure it wasn't the new upgraded dish I received.

Have they always been overcompressing?

it's not just on directv that there's pixelation/macroblocking

i get it here via Cablevision

uhd is notorious for low bitrate, ugly transmissions, just like their owner, NBC.

that's why stuff on those channels always look horrible with tons of pixelation

UHD has got to be the worst of all HD channels.

US Open looked alright in the last few weeks; not much else worth watching there IMO.

They have some Sons & Daughters (hilarious) and Six Feet Under episodes that are worth watching. Occasionally good movies are shown. But I can't stand all the "Action Sports" filler they constantly repeat.

I'll say! Was watching Painkiller Jane, this morning, even the adverts were unwatchable, very sad, what ever the reason. :(

Did Universal HD just drop its bitrate recently? I checked their feed last night and it seemed unusually low.

With D*, I saw significant blocking on UHD at times.

As for why it would better at times than others on D*, they use real time multiplexing, which changes the bit rate as different channels have different bit rates.

When D* gets the new MPEG4 channels up and running, hopefully this will cease to be an issue, but this remains to be seen.

No that would be TNT HD, at least if you go by them calling it a HD channel.
