I've been debating purchasing my first projector for a while now.

I'm currently looking at the Panasonic AE1000U and the Marantz VP4001. Can anyone comment on the difference in PQ and perceived detail between the two projectors? Is it worth the difference in price? If not, I might keep the Marantz around and save the extra money to go towards a laser based 1080p when they come out. Optimistic, I know, but with laser rear projection TVs approaching, I have my fingers crossed.

The Epson Home Cinema 1080 was originally on my list, but I saw it (the Pro version) at a local dealer, and the colors seemed unnaturally saturated and the SDE really killed me, as I plan on a viewing distance of about 12 feet and a screen about 120" (maybe HP as I plan to shelf mount).

BTW, I'm coming from watching movies on my 24" widescreen Dell monitor, so anything is going to be a BIG step up.

Any thoughts and advice are greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Barney

FWIW, The Marantz is well calibrated OOTB.

Since I have not seen the AE1000U, I will not attempt to comment on a comparison, however it is a PJ that uses SmoothScreen technology. Some like it and some find it soft. The Marantz will give you sharp PQ.

Regardless, most know my choice would be to save your money for better 1080p and enjoy the Marantz which you will not be disappointed with.
