YES Network, NFL Network, A&E and History Channel Return

By Linda Moss -- Multichannel News

All four HDTV networks that were knocked off the air earlier this week by a fire were back in service, according to officials.

YES Network HD and NFL Network HD were back on the air after their uplinker, Ascent Media, returned to full operations Thursday following a long-power outage and a rooftop fire at its networks-services facility in Stamford, Conn., on Monday.

A&E Television Networks got HD versions of The History Channel and A&E Network back on the air Tuesday after they, too, had gone black due to the fire.

“Virtually all services have been restored,” said Peter Brickman, Managing Director of Ascent Media’s Stamford operation. “While this incident certainly impacted our ability to provide full services, we were fortunately able to provide some level of business continuity for most clients. The restoration back to normal operations has proceeded smoothly.”

Ascent Media used its facilities in Glenbrook, Conn., Minneapolis and Burbank, Calif., to provide origination and distribution services for several customers.

Early Monday morning, in the midst of an extended power outage, a fire occurred on the roof at the Stamford facility. The fire required the evacuation of about 25 employees. No one was injured.

TV Predictions and Multichannel News both reported the same thing - that all four networks reported being back in HD. But as most people know here, all four networks don't broadcast everything in HD.

I talked to a person at A&E Networks in NY today and they didn't have a clue what I was talking about. They said they haven't received a single call about the stretched SD and zero HD programming since they came back online.

Maybe they should try monitoring their own channel.

or maybe everyone should flood them with calling about it, then they cant say they haven't received any calls.

The HD bug is back on A&E but they are still stretching. Might be permanent.

I highly doubt that it would be permanent i mean that would be ridiculous its problay due to the hd equipment and everything being damaged.they problay just got the bug up so you can identify the station. atleast i hope its like that if its like that....then that has to be the dumbest idea.

edit: The bug is back on History channel hd also

As of 2:00 PM EST...

Now A&E HD and History Channel HD logos appear! But still streched and squashed SD feeds!

They have a HD webpage...

http://www.aetv.com/aehd

The only HD feeds I seen over the past months were CSI Miami, Sopranos,

Family Jewels and one or two Cold Case! Everything else was showed in 4:3 SD

So they have been having problems for a while now! I emailed them again

about this and the stretching!

Gota keep on them!

I guess when something actually list as HD actually shows up on the screen in HD, then we'll know if its for real or not.

Well, I just looked at HC HD and to my suprise the show Universe is in HD!

But audio sync is out! If I remember correctly it was like that before the fire!

NG HD is out of audio sync sometimes, anyway!

Commercials are still streched! They should do what TLC, Discovery, Science,

Animal HD does use a variable aspect and set it to where things are not streched

and squashed leaving only small black columns

A&E so far Streached SD, we'll see later I quess if CSI Miami is in HD

thats pretty cool, but my question is what is your big concern about commercials being stretched are the commercials that important to you that you must have them in a certain AR.

I seem to recall (and forgive the lack of attention I've given this particular item, but its strictly a recollection here)

I seem to recall SD commercials DURING and HD telcast on HD-HD being stretched, while actual SD programming was shown in 4:3, OAR, commercials and everything.

The Stretched commercial thing is something that appears to go on-and-off with the real HD.

But its a good cause though. :D :D :D

The idea is not all show were recorded in HD, so that means they would look better than looking streched and squashed

See for yourself, tune in to TLC HD, Discovery HD, Science HD or Animal HD

Gee, I thought everybody has Dish Network!

DN is the best! I had Comcast for years,

they were too expensive and only had about 6 HD channels

Since January 2007 I have DN about 30 HD channels.

Now DN has 10 PPV in HD, 5 Big Ten Collage Football HD, 34 HD channels

including Monster HD, 24/7 monster movies and no commercials!

And more HD coming by the end of the year!

I just love it! Also, is cheaper than Comcast!

If you can get DN, get it!

at this time im unable to due to contact reasons.

How much are you paying for DN? and how many boxes do you got and that such.

Right now im paying 105 for Every channel except for like the sports plan,2 HD Boxes, 1 SD Box,1 Expanded Basic Cable(Have to go satellite sd box i know if i was going to) Every movie channel and all that such and all the hd channels charter carries which is like 15 or something.I believe i would be paying alot more if i was to go to dish.Ive switched from cable to dish so many times in the past but in the past i didnt have hd with dish or anything.

I have VIP 622 DVR AND VIP 211 HD boxes and DN is always updating them

250 SD channels + HD is $70 I get $20 credit for 10 months = $50

If you want HBO, ShowTime, CineMax, Starz and guess what else,

Comcast Sports Net for $35 more

I was paying $100 for dumb Comcast and no preimum channels

Hopefully by Jan 2008 Verizon Phone Co will have Fiber Optics

up and I'll be on the super fast internet!

No HD on History HD. That company is a joke. Even before the fire they used to forget to switch HD on A&E HD and History HD. Now it is crap. YES HD and NFL HD are back to normal since last week.

Today, I spoke with a technician at Ascent Media Networks (the uplink facility for A&E Networks which includes the A&E and History channels) and A&E Director of Operations, Rob Jackson and both told me that A&E's management made the decision to change from OAR to 16:9 upconverted stretchovision. They agreed it didn't look good but they could do nothing about it. He suggested contacting A&E's viewer relations so I sent an email to: ae.viewerrelations@AETV.com. Anyone who feels strongly about this issue should do the same.

I sent one too...a short, but direct email stating that the distorted image makes otherwise outstanding programming virtually unwatchable.

I hope they get the hint...

I called today and spoke with Rob Jackson at A&E. I told him about stretchovision. I also told him that Ascent Media Networks forgets to switch HD when the show is HD. I told him that Two Corys is never in HD, Family Jewels even before the fire hardly ever and that it was like that even before the fire. Plus that History HD is all stretched now. Everybody should call him at 212-210-1400 and tell him the same thing.

They contract and pay Ascent Media Networks for playback and uplink so if people complain they will force to monitor and play everything that is HD in HD.
