View Full Version : Acer PH530, Optima HD70, OR Mitsu. HC1500??? what do you guys think ?
illnastyimpreza 09-15-07, 01:06 PM ok So I've leveled it down between these 3 projectors for my first PJ...
I'm right now leaning twards the Mitsu due to the fact its normaly priced @ around 1500 and is onl sale for like 889....I would think it was a better projector...
I have also heard good things about the other 2...
What will be the best picture for my thearture room ?
room is only 13' x 13' with a projected screen size of 105''
my ceilings are rather low at about 6' 6'' ...
which PJ should I choose ???
I would save some money and go with the PH530 or HD70 (since the Ph530 price just went up $100) or spend some money and go with the Marantz VP4001.
louthewiz 09-15-07, 01:56 PM The Acer will do you just fine with that room size, And the best thing is that the replacement lamps go for $200.00 ...
Wait till tigerdirect gets more at the price of $599 then get the acer... It might take a month though...
gwlaw99 09-15-07, 04:43 PM The acer is a great deal. I got the HD70 because the wife thought it looked better. The Mits is best if you need the extra brightness.

where did you view them from ?? if you don't mind me asking...
Its going to be in my home thearture room, which is basicly a Bat cave....so added brightness is not important to counteract and ambient light....
BUT would the added brightness help make the picture more "alive" ??
louthewiz 09-15-07, 06:50 PM I can watch a movie with the lights "On" and it's surprisingly sharp,
The Acer will fit your needs...

gwlaw99 09-15-07, 06:50 PM If it's a bat cave then all of them will have plenty of brightness. If you go with the acer, wait to see if its back in stock at TD in a few days.
Looked as in the physical machine looked better. Wife acceptance factor.
louthewiz 09-15-07, 06:51 PM The Acer will fit your needs perfectly,
I watched a movie today with the lights ON...

Legairre 09-15-07, 08:29 PM Anyone know how loud the Acer is in it's econo mode? The Mitsu is 25dB in econo.
Thanks
louthewiz 09-15-07, 08:38 PM Mine is very silent in eco mode.
Legairre 09-16-07, 11:01 AM Thanks Lou any one know the eco dBs, I'm asking because what's quiet to one person may not be to another.
Also the projector central calulator show the Acer at 9FL brightness on a 104" diagonal screen while the Mitsu is at 19FL , both at about 12.5 feet from the screen. That would make the Mitsu more than twice as bright as the Acer. How do you guys that own one feel about the Acer's brightness?
EDIT:
I just checked the projector central calulator for brightness on my Sanyo Z2 and when new it's brightness from 12.5 feet on a 104" screen was 8FL. So now know the Acer is pretty much the same brightness of a Sanyo Z2. I have over 6000 hrs on the Z2, but when new the brighness was just OK, but you could still watch with the lights on. I think it would be worth it for to go with the Mitsu since it's twice as bright. The extra brightness will come in handy when there lamp ages and brightness dropp off a good bit.
garciab 09-16-07, 11:25 AM If your ceiling is really that low, you need to check your application for image offset, especially since you are wanting a 104" image. Don't know if the Acer has lense shift, if it does that's a big plus in this app. Otherwise, the other two will likely require quite a bit of keystoning, which may be undesirable.

what exactly is keystoning?
and how do I check if a certain projector has enough "image offset" ???
tattootearz 09-16-07, 01:41 PM Keystoning is a function that is designed to digitally correct the "trapezoid'ish" shape of the projected image, which is a result of the projector not being perfectly squared up with the screen. Common mounting hurdle with DLP projectors.
Keystone adjustment does have a negative effect on the image. But you will NOT notice it when playing Video. From what I've noticed about Keystone correction, using just (1) click is no different then using (20), in terms of degradation. The effect it has on the image seems not to increase but only change locations based upon how many clicks you use. From my personal experience, the major negative effects of it include; blurred Windows desktop icons & fonts.
I'm using 5 clicks myself with the "Ace" and it doesnt affect PQ at all...

Also, Acer PH530 has NO Lens Shift.

awesome... so it would be better to not run any keystone at all ?? I might just mount the projector on the rear wall about level with the screen(but above my head).... would this get rid of having to keystone it ??
also... what is lense shift??

Don't know if the Acer has lense shift, if it does that's a big plus in this app. Otherwise, the other two will likely require quite a bit of keystoning, which may be undesirable. My ceiling is 7'4" and my screen with the Z2 is 22" off the floor. From reading post it seems that the Mitsu has a 35% offset and using the Mutsi proj caculator the bottom of the image would be 15.5" off the floor. With the Z2 the image part (border is 19" off floor)of my screen is currently 21" off the floor and from reading post it seems you can angle the Mutsu up at the front less than an inch and gain 5 inches in image height. Also a small amout of keystone with the Mitsu and the Acer doesn't seems to mess with the image. Also I think the Acer has a 37% offset vs. the Mitsu's 35%. With the Mitsu being twice as bright I still think it's probably worth the extra money.
You really shouldn't create multiple threads which all contain these same questions. All the information you need, has already been given to you. You now need to go and sit with this info and decide what will work in your room.

Agreeing to that! Just take the plunge already!
Anthony Cler 09-17-07, 04:59 PM I have the Mits (HD1000u) and love it. But...I'd probably get the Acer for the lower unit price and cheaper lamps.

yeah... this is what I'm leaning twards..... then I can spend the extra cash on a screen, and cables...
But what is the best cable to run... My current DVD player has component video. But I would like to upgrade to HDDVD or blue ray vie an Xbox 360 or PS3 pretty soon...
what would the best connector style to use be ?
percept 09-19-07, 03:57 PM i think the majority of people will tell you hdmi. I have an older version of the xbox with no hdmi. When i upgraded my 360 cable from component to vga, it was a night and day difference.
mikethewxguy 09-21-07, 06:17 PM I know this may be a silly question, but can the Acer be cieling mounted?
And, any info on how the lens shift (if it has one?) works...

Yes it can with no problems at all.:)
Legairre 09-21-07, 10:00 PM I know this may be a silly question, but can the Acer be cieling mounted?
And, any info on how the lens shift (if it has one?) works...Lens shift allows you to mount the project on the ceiling or table and adjust the lens horizontal and vertical. The projector maintains it's position but the lens can be shift up down left and right.

if the acer had it... I would buy it in a second.
mikethewxguy 09-22-07, 12:13 AM thanks guys - I definitely need the lens shift...so I'm looking into the Epson HC400 at this pint over the Acer...
